December Artist

JoEllen Moldoff

For me painting and printmaking are processes of discovery and surprise.  For the past several months I have enjoyed making monotypes. A monotype is a one of a kind, hand-pulled print.

I work with acrylic paints and inks using a gelatin plate (Gelli plate © and Gel press plate ©) and a variety of materials to make impressions and marks.  Each print is composed of layers. I never know exactly what the final result will be until the monotype is pulled off the plate. This is what I most enjoy:  the “happy accident”.

I have also enjoyed more traditional painting with acrylics on canvas.  I like to keep the painting loose and watch it develop. Shapes emerge, sometimes abstract, other times more representational.

If you would like to purchase a monotype or painting, I will donate the proceeds to the Friends of the Library.  Just call 360.376.7680, or email

Retirement Reception for
Nita Couchman

Thursday, December 20 @ 3:30pm

Come say goodbye to Children's Librarian Nita Counchman at 3:30pm Thursday, December 20th

Nita is retiring after 11 years as our Children's Librarian.  Nita joined the Library as a volunteer in 2004, and was hired as a part-time substitute and staff support person only a few months later.  She became our Children's Librarian in the fall of 2007 when Carol Erickson retired.  Also on hand will be the Library's new Children's Librarian, Jenny DeGroot.

Orcas Island Public Library,
2019 Exhibit Schedule

In December 2017, the Orcas Island Public Library committed itself to support the visual arts on Orcas Island by inviting island artists to exhibit in the newly expanded library.

The Library is pleased to report that during 2018, sixteen Orcas Island artists shared their work with the community, supporting the library in its mission to support all learners by maintaining strong collections, resources and services; to serve as a welcoming place for reflection, exploration, discussion and networking; and to reach out effectively to all groups and individuals.

With this notice, the Library is seeking applications for the 2019 exhibit schedule.

Interested Orcas Island artists of any age should submit, online or in-person to Director Phil Heikkinen, pheikkenin@orcaslibrary.org, an application to include the following items:

  1. name, address, email, and phone

  2. six digital or printed images of your work

  3. brief (200 words) statement of interest and artist’s bio.

The Library Art Committee will review applications and contact artists to create the 2019 exhibit schedule.  Thank you to all the island artists who exhibited in 2018!

Interested in researching your family tree?
Come branch out with us!

The Orcas Island Genealogy Club will share a special presentation (free and open to everyone) at the library on Tuesday, December 18 from 10:30 to 12:30. “Genealogy and Local History:  Research Soulmates.

Robin Jacobson, San Juan Historical Society and Museum researcher and board president, shares what she has learned from some of the best trainers in the country. This will be a lighthearted and “packed with tips” slide presentation, focused on the intersection of genealogy and local history.

Family history research includes some actual detective work and historical context. Genealogy without documentation is folklore. Be a history detective with the help of Robin’s top research tips and favorite resources, specific to the San Juan Islands region and worldwide. Do not fear falling down the rabbit hole of research! You’ll be able to guide your course, making surprising and useful discoveries along the way.

For the past ten years Robin has been documenting a San Juan Islands family tree (about 3,200 people and growing) and has benefited from attending genealogy workshops and national conferences for many years.

Bring a computer or other device that can connect to the internet.  The Orcas Genealogy Club meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month and everyone is welcome.  Contact Kathi Ciskowski at 360-376-4186 for more information.

WELCOME

Welcome to December at the Library.

Because we still have space available in 2019, I we are repeating our invitation to Orcas Island artists to propose a display at the Library, as described to the left.

The annual Holiday Tea, hosted by the Friends of the Library, was held this year on Saturday, December 1. We had terrific attendance, music, food, and  the ever-popular visit by  Santa and Mrs. Claus. With such a full house, it’s difficult to imagine how the Library functioned before our recent expansion project.

Our Chess Club continues on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 3:30 to 5:30 pm, which in December falls on the 18th. We are experimenting with an informal tournament, in which attendees can add their names to a crosstable and play each other if/when schedules permit. Everyone at all ages and skill levels is welcome!

Please join me in welcoming our newest staff member, Janet Marlow, who is our new Administrative Services Coordinator, taking over from Mary Pugh, who is our new Program Coordinator. And I hope you will join us on the 20th from 3:30 to 5 pm to recognize Nita Couchman’s 14 years at the Library, 11 of them as Children’s Librarian. Thanks to all three!

See you soon—

Phil Heikkinen, Library Director
pheikkinen@orcaslibrary.org 360-376-4985.

Welcome Janet Marlow

Janet Marlow is our new Administrative Services Coordinator.  Janet recently moved to Orcas Island from Houston, Texas, along with her husband Will, three dogs, and two guinea pigs.  She has family that lives on Whidbey and has been in love with the area for years, so she and Will finally decided to trade heat and city life for a beautiful environment where they could spend more time outdoors.

A life-long book lover, Janet is thrilled that she can now put her corporate skills to use at the library.   When not working, Janet can be found gardening, hiking, kayaking, reading, or playing trivia at the Lower Tavern.  She’s anxious to meet people in the community, so please stop her and say hi!
