December Artist
JoEllen Moldoff
For me painting and printmaking are processes of discovery and surprise. For the past several months I have enjoyed making monotypes. A monotype is a one of a kind, hand-pulled print.
I work with acrylic paints and inks using a gelatin plate (Gelli plate © and Gel press plate ©) and a variety of materials to make impressions and marks. Each print is composed of layers. I never know exactly what the final result will be until the monotype is pulled off the plate. This is what I most enjoy: the “happy accident”.
I have also enjoyed more traditional painting with acrylics on canvas. I like to keep the painting loose and watch it develop. Shapes emerge, sometimes abstract, other times more representational.
If you would like to purchase a monotype or painting, I will donate the proceeds to the Friends of the Library. Just call 360.376.7680, or email

Orcas Island Public Library,
2019 Exhibit Schedule
In December 2017, the Orcas Island Public Library committed itself to support the visual arts on Orcas Island by inviting island artists to exhibit in the newly expanded library.
The Library is pleased to report that during 2018, sixteen Orcas Island artists shared their work with the community, supporting the library in its mission to support all learners by maintaining strong collections, resources and services; to serve as a welcoming place for reflection, exploration, discussion and networking; and to reach out effectively to all groups and individuals.
With this notice, the Library is seeking applications for the 2019 exhibit schedule.
Interested Orcas Island artists of any age should submit, online or in-person to Director Phil Heikkinen, pheikkenin@orcaslibrary.org, an application to include the following items:
-
name, address, email, and phone
-
six digital or printed images of your work
-
brief (200 words) statement of interest and artist’s bio.
The Library Art Committee will review applications and contact artists to create the 2019 exhibit schedule. Thank you to all the island artists who exhibited in 2018!
Interested in researching your family tree?
Come branch out with us!
The Orcas Island Genealogy Club will share a special presentation (free and open to everyone) at the library on Tuesday, December 18 from 10:30 to 12:30. “Genealogy and Local History: Research Soulmates.
Robin Jacobson, San Juan Historical Society and Museum researcher and board president, shares what she has learned from some of the best trainers in the country. This will be a lighthearted and “packed with tips” slide presentation, focused on the intersection of genealogy and local history.
Family history research includes some actual detective work and historical context. Genealogy without documentation is folklore. Be a history detective with the help of Robin’s top research tips and favorite resources, specific to the San Juan Islands region and worldwide. Do not fear falling down the rabbit hole of research! You’ll be able to guide your course, making surprising and useful discoveries along the way.
For the past ten years Robin has been documenting a San Juan Islands family tree (about 3,200 people and growing) and has benefited from attending genealogy workshops and national conferences for many years.
Bring a computer or other device that can connect to the internet. The Orcas Genealogy Club meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month and everyone is welcome. Contact Kathi Ciskowski at 360-376-4186 for more information.
