Weathering the Crypto Winter

While we don’t like to focus on price in the Crypto NYC community, it is a driver of a lot of the action over the past week.  Bitcoin experienced its largest difficulty adjustment, -15%, since the -18% drop in Oct of 2011. This highlights the beauty of a dynamic system like bitcoin and negates the “mining death spiral” narrative.  The truth is that hashpower follows price, not the reverse. The steadily falling ETH price also seems to have made a dent on the NYC crypto ecosystem as Consensys went through a large reorganization attempting to streamline itself for what could be a long winter.  The most exciting thing to come from the recent crypto market crash has been the remarkable stability of DAI.  We are approaching an ETH price where a lot of Maker CDP’s will start to be liquidated and this thread does a great job explaining the situation.  In the midst of the storm, Coinbase re-committed to it’s vision of being the West’s Binance announcing their plans to start listing sh*tcoins.  Despite the continued collapse of the market, we’ll continue diving into the fundamentals, with Raf leading a discussion of the exciting Uniswap protocol.

My Blockchain Journey (medium.com)

“With crypto all over the news and New York City being a place with a high concentration of enthusiasts from finance and tech backgrounds, a great deal of events went on and I went to a few; however, it felt to me like an insider’s game — as I wasn’t a trader, investor, developer, or founder, the engagements I had with the other attendees felt limited. Also, it looked like a good amount of the people there seemed to know each other.”

8 Important Things To Know About Security Tokens / Token Regulation (medium.com)

“2017 has truly been the year of Initial Coin Offerings with the investment volume of ICOs even surpassing venture capital funding. This happened even with these crowdfunding initiatives occuring in unregulated (or at least poorly regulated) territory. It is important for both investors and companies to be aware of the regulatory and legal landscape so that they can avoid future civil and criminal liabilities. That is why we put together the most critical things you need to know about token regulations.”

Answering your questions about Continuous Organizations (medium.com)

“If you have more questions about Continuous Organizations or Bonding Curves in general, please consider posting your questions on our discussion forum and I’ll make sure to answer all of them. Using the forum will also help others find the answers to their questions more effectively. Of course, feel free to reach out to me directly if you want your question to stay confidential but, as a general rule, please consider posting on the forum by default.”

Bitcoin Futures are Not the Future of Bitcoin (medium.com)

“The cryptocurrency markets are undeniably depressed right now, but instead of trying to clutch onto straws in the hopes of one more cryptocurrency pump to “cash out,” what the industry ought to be looking for is building out the infrastructure that will lay the foundation for more widespread adoption, ease of access and use cases. Whilst it is far beyond me to decypher (misspelling intentional) what Satoshi Nakamoto’s ultimate vision for Bitcoin was, I would think that its use as a tool for speculation and gambling on a regulated futures exchange is far from his Utopian aim.”

Blockchain Ownership & Crypto Anticommons (medium.com)

“Defining blockchain ownership may be as important a problem as “Blockchain Governance”. This post describes ideas and pitfalls in making ownership rights, the future of blockchain patents and collective goods, and some important tradeoffs to consider when creating new crypto property on blockchain.”
