Traveling with Arrangements Abroad
It was a great privilege to be selected as Artist in Residence with Arrangements Abroad this year. Arrangements Abroad offers curated trips with scholars from preeminent national museums and universities, who lead you through some of the most beautiful and iconic spots on the globe. There are still a few small works available from my plein air painting trips with them to Russia, Holland, and Belgium in 2018. Below are three and there more on my site.
Next year I will be traveling with them again. Stay tuned for plein air work from some more spectacular regions!

Southwest Art Magazine - Artistic Excellence Award
This year, I received an honorable mention in Southwest Art Magazine's Artistic Excellence Contest for Early Morning Avenues, a painting of a house in Salt Lake City. Click here for a fun interview in December's issue of Southwest Art that covers how I do my work and "the one thing I will never do.." Maybe.

Here's a look at how several paintings of Classic Cleaners were developed from a plein air session last summer.
|
|
I set up outside Dick N' Dixie's Pub on a beautiful August evening to attempt to capture the light as it faded on Classic Cleaners great store front and killer sign on Third Street South in downtown Salt Lake.
Plein air work at this time of day, or frankly any time, is a desperate attempt to get information down on a small canvas as efficiently as possible. In this case, the fun included a gallery of pub onlookers which included my husband quietly drinking beer and observing the comings and goings. The top shot shows the painting in progress and the second, on the lower left, the resulting work. I wish I'd taken a picture of the encouraging pub clientele!
I took that work back to the studio and developed it into the painting on the lower right that reflected a later time of day and that interplay between evening light and the eerie yellow glow of the sign.
I wanted to explore that iconic sign and store front more, and so made another larger painting, Dark Classic, shown below. Sometimes an evening and a subject yield several ideas worth painting.

Thanks for taking the time to read and look. Follow me on Instagram for pictures of paintings in progress @elisezollerart. Please see my website for other gift ideas. There is some nice work, large and small, still available. See the toolbar on the left of the site's page for different types of paintings that might interest you from landscapes to flowers to still life and smaller work.
Have a wonderful holiday season and stay in touch, Elise
P.S. Sometimes when it all gets too dark and serious, you just need to bust out the Christmas tree ornaments.
