You can help PhD students conducting important research

  • Liver Fluke in Livestock and Kangaroos
Jane Lamb is a PhD student from the School of Environmental and Rural Science at the University of New England in Armidale. Jane is conducting research on "The prevalence of liver fluke and drug resistance in kangaroos" and the impact on livestock. She is calling for livestock producers within a 200km radius of Armidale to help out by participating in a survey which will only take 5 -10 minutes. Your feedback will provide valuable data about whether kangaroos are a reservoir for liver fluke and the impact on dispersal in livestock. So take some time and help out. • Wanted: Dung Beetles
Sarah Leeson is a  PhD student from University of Western Australia. She is researching the genetic factors that cause half of the species of dung beetles imported from Africa and Europe to fail to survive in Australia. She wants to know how genetic variation has influenced dung beetles and their ability to thrive and survive in Australia. She is seeking help from land owners across Australia to help her to collect dung beetles in January. All you need is a shovel, a bucket and one hour of your time. She will send you everything else. To be involved or for more information contact Sarah Leeson at sarah.leeson@research.uwa.edu.au

Goodbye and good luck to Jason Siddell and Glen Uebergang

Many of you will have worked with Jason Siddell, our Livestock Extension Officer, over the past 5 years. Jason has recently taken up a role as a Development Officer for Extensive Livestock with NSW Department of Primary Industries based at Armidale. We were very sad see Jason go but thank him for all his excellent work for Northern Tablelands LLS. We wish him the best of luck in his new role. Jason can still be contacted on 0459 162 295. We will be recruiting a new Livestock Officer to commence in 2019.

Glen Uebergang, our Mixed Farming Agronomist for the past four years, has also moved onto greener pastures (pun intended). We thank Glen for his work on improving crop and pasture management across the region. We will be filling Glen's role shortly.

So stay tuned for details of our new team members in a future Ag Update.
