Today's Top Stories

House Democrats seek voting rights fixes. Senate GOP says it’s already dead (McClatchy). Before he even sees the bill, Mitch McConnell (R-KY) digs his heels in against democracy. Note that there will likely a separate voting rights effort led by Rep. Sewell (D-AL).

The NC-9 scandal continues to lead national voting rights coverage: Also in North Carolina: North Carolina voter ID bill goes to Gov. Roy Cooper (The News & Observer). This version of the bill attempts to address absentee ballots, too, but it’s a haphazard attempt to respond to the controversy discussed above.

The GOP Is Making Its Contempt for Democracy Clear. Will the Mainstream Media? (New York Magazine). Eric Levitz confirms our sense that national media is letting state GOPs off too easy with the weak coverage of power grabs in Wisconsin, Michigan, and North Carolina. He forgot to mention Ohio, but this is a good example of media accountability that we should promote and share with other journalists as a gentle but firm call-in. Related: ‘Contagion’: After Midterms, GOP Steps Up National Effort To Limit Voting Rights (Talking Points Memo).

Here’s what Louisiana’s Secretary of State candidates say about voter ID, ex-felons voting and other issues (The Times-Picayune). Note that there is a runoff election for Louisiana Secretary of State tomorrow, December 8, in the Pelican State. Good opportunity for a geo-targeted GOTV post on social.

Listen: “Back To Selma And Beyond: Dr. Carol Anderson On Her Book One Person, No Vote” (Crooked Media). The Emory University professor with a new book on voting rights joins Ana Marie Cox on her podcast “With Friends like These.”

Ari Berman: Breaking: North Carolina GOP passes voter ID law in lame duck session before they lose supermajority & Dem gov can veto

Law targets voter impersonation, which is practically non-existent, while doing little to stop massive election fraud committed by GOP in NC09

Marc E. Elias: If the North Carolina GOP is saying the election fraud warrants a new election, it means its much worse than we know.

Brennan Center: What is it about democracy that lawmakers in Wisconsin and Michigan failed to learn?

Sample tweets: power grabs

QT Taniel: More evidence that voting rights must not be a partisan issue–either you believe in the freedom to vote or you are unfit to be an elected leader.

There's no getting around it: GOP leaders in NC, MI, WI, and OH would rather keep their power than live in a democratic country: http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2018/12/north-carolina-gop-fraud-mccrae-dowless-wisconsin-evers-democracy-media.html

In November, voters said YES to democracy. But, in Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Ohio, GOP politicians are clapping their hands over their ears http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2018/12/north-carolina-gop-fraud-mccrae-dowless-wisconsin-evers-democracy-media.html

This is a disturbing trend. Lawmakers can’t take away people’s right to vote, or a governor’s powers, just because their party lost an election. It’s threatens democracy itself.
