Sentient Today

It’s Friday, December 7.

When will we learn that talking about animal agriculture and talking about climate change are the same thing? Meat offered at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change produces 4x as many greenhouse gas emissions as the plant-based alternatives on the menu.

Clearly, the 30,000-person gathering of climate decision makers is not ready to commit to climate mitigation. Conference attendees have twice as many meat-based dishes to choose from than plant-based ones. This meat-laden menu is an insult to the work of everyone there. And it makes it hard to believe anyone—even the best and brightest minds in climate policymaking—understands the real cost of what we eat.

Your Five-A-Day

  1. 👀 Employees can still tell others what they’ve seen inside a factory farm, but they can’t film it for evidence. Ag gag laws are helping farmers get what they want—absolutely no outside access to their factory farming operations. What do they have to hide? [Sentient Media]
  2. 😨 12 million pounds of ground beef has been recalled for fear of Salmonella contamination. That’s enough to feed 50,000 Americans’ meat habits for a year. The suspected culprit? A subsidiary of the largest meat company in the world. [Vox]
  3. 🙌 District of Columbia public schools just committed to replacing animal protein with plant-based proteins at lunch. The decision to adopt the Good Food Purchasing Program follows the likes of Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, and Chicago. Check out their five-year targets. [Animal Welfare Institute]
  4. 🐮 According to the 2018 Food Sustainability Index, the world’s most sustainable food system goes to France. The U.S., on the other hand, uses way too much water. I wonder what that’s all about… *cough meat and dairy cough* [New Food Economy]
  5. 💯 The internet is mad at PETA again. After the group proposed animal-friendly versions of popular euphemisms like beating a dead horse, Twitter asked, “Don’t you have bigger fish to fry?” Keep fighting, friends! [Washington Post]
