Title: Preparing the Way

Date: Saturday, December 8, 2018

Focus Passage: Luke 3:3–6

[John the Baptist] went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

‘Prepare the way of the Lord,

        make his paths straight.

    Every valley shall be filled,

and every mountain and hill shall be made low,

and the crooked shall become straight,

and the rough places shall become level ways,

and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”

Reflect: John the Baptist figures prominently in the season of Advent. John prepared the way for the ministry of Jesus Christ. However, we should note that the above quotation from the Prophet Isaiah proclaims that the Lord himself will bring salvation to his people.

Consider: How do the metaphors of mountains and valleys and rough, crooked ways speak to the difficulties that we face in life? What mountains or valleys are on your horizon? Do these challenges inspire you or frustrate you? Likewise, is your way rough and crooked or smooth and straight?

Pray: Isaiah and John prophesied that the Lord would save us from ruin if we repent and turn to him. How does this assurance encourage you? Take a moment to assess what type of terrain you are facing. Ask the Lord to prepare the way. Rest in the assurance that he will be with you regardless of the road ahead.
