Cilantro

Fresh, locally-grown Cilantro is this week’s Fresh Pick of the Week from the Coachella Valley Certified Farmers’ MarketsCilantro, also known as Coriander or Chinese Parsley, is a pungent annual herb. Although it is native to Southern Europe, North Africa, and Southwestern Asia, Cilantro is now grown and used throughout the world. All parts of the plant are edible, but the two parts that are most often used are the fresh leaves and stems (commonly known as Cilantro) and the dried seeds (commonly known as Coriander). Cilantro has a distinct smell and flavor. Its fresh leaves are most often used to flavor Mexican dishes, South Asian, Indian and Chinese dishes.  Seeds (Coriander), on the other hand, are used to spice Indian dishes, as ingredients in pickling, to spice breads, and even in certain beer recipes. An important note for those first discovering Cilantro and Coriander: The flavors are quite different, and not interchangeable in recipes.

Did you know: Cilantro is best when fresh, but can be frozen or dried for future use. To freeze, place a small amount dry Cilantro leaves in a single layer on a cookie sheet and freeze. Once frozen, gather the leaves into a freezer bag, then return to the freezer. The frozen Cilantro can be used for up to six months.

Price: $2 per bunch and up.
