At third Teacher-Powered conference, flipping education system is possible
The first weekend of December, more than 320 educators and supporters convened in Boston for the third Teacher-Powered Schools National Conference.

There teachers told similar stories: Frustrated that traditional school models did not meet their community’s needs, teachers, parents, and community members joined together to design new schools that would.

“Knowing others think, believe, and know that ‘flipping’ a system is possible ... brings me to a new place today,” said one conference-goer about the sense of community with other attendees.
We were excited to see so many of you at the 2018 conference.

It was our largest gathering yet—in fact, it sold out! We welcomed attendees from at least 26 states and the District of Columbia, in addition to nine international guests.

72 percent of educators came from district schools, with 27 percent charter and 1 percent independent. 15 university researchers attended, signalling a growing interest in this innovative model for running schools.

The power of Teacher-Powered Schools to create engaged citizens
In this blogging roundtable with the Center for Teaching Quality, we’re looking at how teachers in these schools—with collaborative leadership, shared decision-making, and student voice baked into the teacher-powered model—promote the habits of healthy democracy.
