Market Tidbits
David Layland,
President of the Board

The market on Saturday, December 22, was the fourth market of our inaugural winter season and I'm happy to report everything is going well.

Whenever something new is undertaken there is no guarantee it will be successful but thanks to our vendors and customers the winter market is off to a great start. We have been very pleased with the variety of vendors participating in the winter market and most importantly we have been very pleased with the number of customers continuing to shop at the market.

This is not to say everything is perfect. The market would like to have a few more bakeries for customers to choose from and a few more options for prepared foods. Filling in niches like this is a high priority. If you feel something is missing from the market please let us know.

Happy Holidays to all of our newsletter readers!

Recipe of the Week

Persimmon Chips
Adapted from The 52 New Foods Challenge

By Jennifer Tyler Lee

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 90 minutes
Serves 4
Ingredients
4 large persimmons

Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 250 F. Line two rimmed baking sheets with aluminum foil and spray lightly with olive oil (or line them with a Silpat mat, no foil required).
  2. Leaving the skin on, slice the persimmons crosswise into layers, about 1/4 inch thick. Remove the seed if needed.
  3. Divide the slices evenly between the baking sheets and bake for 60 minutes. Flip the persimmons, then bake for 30 minutes more, or until the slices are flight brown and crispy. Thicker slices will be a little more chewy. For extra-crispy chips, leave the apples in the oven 15 minutes more. Timing will depend on the moisture content in your persimmons.
  4. Let the chips cool completely, then store in your pantry in an airtight container for up to one week.
About Napa Farmers Market
Napa Farmers Market is a California Certified Farmers Market and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community resource that draws hundreds of shoppers and visitors each market day. Vendors include many local fruit, vegetable and flower growers (some organic); fresh seafood and meat merchants; food purveyors offering coffee, baked goods, pupusas and other ready-to-eat fare; plus, artisanal pottery, jewelry and other hand-crafted wares. Educational kids’ activities, chef demos and nonprofit-organization booths add to the enriching, multicultural shopping experience at the market. The market also participates in the Market Match program, doubling the value of CalFresh benefits purchasing power for all eligible food products.
