Through the eyes of children at Christmastime

“If We Experienced Life Through The Eyes Of A Child
Everything Would Be Magical And Extraordinary.
Let Our Curiosity, Adventure And Wonder Of Life...
Never End.”
by Akiane Kramarik
I had the opportunity to talk to several children this month, including my grandchildren (three of whom have a Dad in the Air Force overseas) and nine in Worship Class. When I asked what was most important to them about Christmas, I was surprised to hear them first say spending time with family. Food they like, decorating cookies, gingerbread houses, and then presents were also important to them. Kids love presents, but it wasn’t the first thing that came to their minds, at least not when talking to their grandmother or teacher.

My kitchen floor just may be a little sticky after cutting out cookies, frosting them, and then adding sprinkles. I must say the Royal Frosting, with just a little added butter and vanilla was tasty and less messy than butter cream. Eight-year-old Max said he really liked the frosting and how it stayed on the cookies. Max likes to tell his little sister that cooking is science. Kids can do a lot of experimenting with liquid and solids by dropping cookie dough, sprinkles or cookies into their hot chocolate to see what happens. It’s a gooey mess in the bottom of the cup––that’s science!

My heart was filled with joy when I visited my grandkids in Virginia this month for an early Christmas. When I said good night to my nine- year-old grandson, he said he didn’t want to get up in the morning to go to school. He excels with his grades, plays cello and loves the chess club but he doesn’t love the idea of going to school. Each night I would ask him what would be great about tomorrow? He could name a few things like chess club, friends and recess. He would brighten as he shared the great things that he would enjoy the next day. Creating a positive intention each day brings anticipation rather than stress for the day. Add thankfulness to cook up a smile and warm up a cold winter day. My intention for the season is to eat colorful vegetables, splurge on smoked salmon, and enjoy a few cookies. This is my story of the season.

Everyone brings their own magic to the season whether it’s lights to brighten the dark evenings, making tamales, lighting candles, or waiting for Chinese New Year. The gift of friends, family, and smiles belong to everyone. Find a friend or colleague who needs a little cheer this season, and give them smiles and a listening ear. With the flurry of shopping for just the right gift, parties, and work that needs to be done, keep in mind that healthy relationships with family, friends and colleagues are most important during the holiday season.
