Christmas message from the Commodore

On behalf of GHYC, I would like to warmly wish all of our members and friends a very happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your continued support during 2018.

I look forward to seeing you all at the AGM on Saturday, December 29th at 4PM followed by a glass of Christmas cheer!

Sunday Dinghy League Prize Giving

We had a very social gathering at the Club on Sunday last for the first ever Sunday Dinghy League prize giving.

We were actually able to present each participant with a great practical participation prize thanks to the generosity of Cork Airport. Each participant got a dry bag to keep their phones and valuables safe and dry while on the water.

The participation of the only adult brave enough to mix it up with this fleet, Fran Lynch, was also noted with a prize from Cork Airport. We do hear however that some other adult members are dusting off their Lasers in preparation for New Year resolutions to get out on the water in the Spring!

You can still check Cork Airport’s website for details of their Twelve Days of Christmas promotion and a chance to win free flights.

Although strictly a Portsmouth Yardstick event, there were only two dinghy types used by competitors; Laser and Topaz. And with the Laser fleet sweeping the board, it was decided to acknowledge the Topaz fleet individually with the placings being: 1st Jessica Tubb, 2nd Eolann Miles, 3rd Muireann Creswell.

The overall league was led start to finish and won by some margin, by the effervescent Tiernan Brown in his 4.7. In second place was Killian Forde (Radial), with Finn Bradburn (4.7) filling out the podium only two points behind his Dragon team mate. It’s notable that the top three spend most of their time now in the Dragon Fleet rather than on dinghies. Time on the water and learning race craft from older members in the Dragon Fleet is obviously paving dividends.

Tiernan, Killian and Finn each received a great trophy courtesy of Ronan Daly Jermyn (RDJ). But more importantly, RDJ have also generously sponsored a beautiful perpetual trophy which will be presented each Autumn and Spring to the overall league winner.
