Former USC MBB AC Bland will take a plea deal in the MBB-FBI case. The last sentence here from the L.A. Times is quite interesting, "...the former coach will plead guilty to one felony count of federal funds bribery and get a Level 10 sentencing guideline. That level calls for six to 12 months in prison, but Bland is expected to receive probation since he doesn’t have a previous criminal record. The deal isn’t believed to include a requirement for Bland to cooperate with prosecutors." (link); The attorney for former Arizona AC Richardson, "We have made no decisions at this time. Motions have been filed consistent with the court deadlines. We are evaluating our options." (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd goes in on reasons that make expansion for the CFP difficult. Hones in on how ESPN may think about the possibility, recounts comments from an unnamed President on the hosting of quarterfinal games on-campus in an eight-team format, "not only said no, but hell no." Further, "A TV consultant told CBS Sports all those quarterfinal games wouldn't necessarily be a ratings winner." More. (link)
The new $338M private-public on-campus arena at Texas is a full go. Oak View Group, Live Nation, C3 Presents & high-profile actor/UT supporter McConaughey are all part of the mix, the latter of "Minister of Culture." University officials believe it's the first deal of it's kind in the nation. 10K seats for hoops, 15K for concerts/other events. Construction begins next summer with completion by the 2020-21 basketball seasons. Video & renderings in all three links. (link, linklink); A new home for South Alabama FB will feature three "flexible social zones." What are they? "These areas provide a place to spend time with family and friends while also enjoying the game. The atmosphere of the social zones is enhanced with large group tables and gathering spaces for groups of fans." Renderings included. (link)
Longtime ECU leader Workman, who has most recently served as Acting COO, reflects on his 34 years in Greenville as he prepares to exit. Points to people & relationships as trump cards. Another insightful takeaway, "One of the keys to branding is consistency. A sustainable brand is consistent. That’s one of the things we maybe didn’t do as well as we should have through the years, but if you look at the most well-known brands, athletically and non-athletically, they’re consistent. I think your fan base, your constituency, that’s what they come back for. That’s what they’re expecting to see. They’re expecting to see their school, their traditions, their culture. Whether you came here in the ‘60s or you graduated in 2018, there should be a consistent culture there." (link)
St. Mary's lands its largest gift ever as $3M from the Kalmanovitz Charitable Foundation will allow the Gaels to move forward with Phase II of work on the Student Athlete Performance Complex (SAPC). "Phase II will include a new student-athlete weight room and further renovations to McKeon Pavilion, including restrooms, locker rooms, and team room enhancements for men's basketball, women's basketball, and women's volleyball." (link); Baylor gets a $500K commitment from the Fudge family as a lead-off for the 'Baylor Built' program, part of the'Preparing Champions for Life' vision. (link)
It never left the top, but Nike is regaining some lost market share as its latest quarterly results beat Wall Street estimates leading to stock price gains. Footwear & apparel were up double digits globally. Push back from the Kaepernick ad campaign was over-stated, Jordan Brand numbers were strong, no issues with Chinese tariffs so far, digital sales a big shot in the arm. North America, specifically, was up 9%. (link)
AdAge sports media expert Crupi writes on why the NFL's Sunday Ticket is the best option for one of the major digital players to break into the premier rights game."Not only are Amazon or Google uniquely positioned to be able to absorb the vertiginous costs associated with securing an exclusive NFL rights package, but both disruptors would be better suited to subsidize the investment." Crupi also says of analysts who believe CBS could be left out of the next negotiations & these comments certainly apply, in some part, to college athletics rights (re: SEC), "...does not take into consideration how quickly CBS would level up should it merge with Viacom. Now that reunification antagonist Les Moonves has been removed from power, it appears increasingly likely that the new-look CBS board (one that is now loaded with mergers-and-acquisitions specialists) will back Shari Redstone's long-deferred desire to combine the two properties. That sort of scaling up would serve to neutralize any concerns about CBS's ability to compete in the NFL auction." More. (link)
An Atlantic 10-Mountain West MBB challenge will begin in 2020-21 & continue during the 2021-22 campaign. Here's the crux: "Matchups for each year will be determined by the league offices based on a number of factors, including the previous year’s records, NET rankings and team achievements, as well as projected rankings and anticipated strength of teams for the upcoming season. The games will take place in late November and early December of each year, with television and digital rights residing with the host conference." (link); ESPN going back in with an expanded MegaCast effort for the upcoming New Year's Six bowl games. New: RefCam for CFP games, line-to-gain camera thanks to two "wireless camera systems build into two movable pylons." Command Center, Coaches Film Room, Thinking Out Loud, DataCenter, SkyCam, All-22, Hometown Audio Feeds all in the mix. (link)

Interim Southern Miss AD Mitchell hires Morehead State Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Smith to the same role in Hattiesburg. Smith is no stranger to the Golden Eagles as he's a 2003 USM grad. Smith: "...it's always been a dream of mine, since I started in college athletics, to come home." Mitchell: "Time and again throughout his career, Brad and his colleagues have produced enhanced marketing and promotions initiatives to improve fan experience and game day atmosphere." (link)
Washington State's OEO concludes former Asst. AD for the Cougar Fund & former stand-out FB student-athlete Gesser did violate the university's sexual harassment guidelines. Seven specific instances mentioned in the report. No word back from the university on if any further action is in the works since Gesser resigned his post. (link)
It's That Time of Year: Maine AD Ralph is on the clock as FB HC Harasymiak is reportedly leaving Orono to become an AC at Minnesota. (link); Bryant AD Smith selects Christopher Columbus HS (Miami, FL) HC Merritt to lead his FB program in Smithfield. (link); Western Michigan HC Lester extended out to 2023. (link); Same for Southeast Missouri State boss Matukewicz. (link)
Lots of good stuff in The Athletic's coverage of the process that landed new Charlotte FB HC Healy as the second-youngest FBS field general. 49ers AD Hill talks about whitewashing Healy's first season at APSU as part of the evaluation process ("Vince Lombardi was probably going to go winless with that team. That wasn’t a rationalization; it was an honest assessment of what he inherited,") and being impressed that the 30-year-old "bet on himself — and he won." Hill also acknowledges the "institutional courage" it took to hire someone with a losing overall record and emphasizes that "We’re going to run this program with fearlessness. We can’t be afraid to make decisions. ...He’s exactly what we were looking for. I think he’s the image of this place: He’s a young, hungry up-and-comer. I think he’s going to be like this institution: He’s going to be a major force to be reckoned with." (link)
After admonishing local press for routinely asserting that he puts together soft OOC schedules, South Carolina MBB HC Martin then dives in on how that narrative is hurting attendance and enthusiasm: "That’s why we got more Virginia fans than South Carolina fans in our game today. This reminded me of my first year here, when we’re out-numbered. And that’s because we continue to put out the wording on stories pertaining to our team that makes everybody think that we’re not good enough. That’s insulting to me. ...When’s the last time a No. 3 team in the country came into South Carolina for a non-conference game? ...We need to change the (rhetoric), we need to change the wording of what we’ve done, so our fans get excited." Also reiterates that schedules are made two years in advance and, regarding the 2016 NCAA tourney snub that included the 81st-ranked sked: "We scheduled real basketball schools (Tulsa, Clemson, St. John’s, Memphis in the non-conference) that year. It’s not my fault their players transferred and they ended up having bad years." (link)

The new unit will house 34 employees, including newly created positions of sports psychologist and sports nutrition coordinator. Deputy AD Strawley: "We conducted a comprehensive assessment of our service offerings and determined that the best model was to have all of these essential areas under one umbrella." (link)
Maryland releases more video in the McNair case, some from surveillance cameras, others from body units. Comments on slow-moving medics can be heard multiple times in the first seven-plus minutes of one video, including, "Did they at least bring him inside? [...] No, he’s out. [...] Still outside? Jesus." (link)
Vermont will reduce scholarships for the XC/T&F programs and it's Swimming and Diving teams in a department-wide cost-cutting effort. Current scholarships will be honored, but swimming will dip to 4.75 (from 5.75) scholarships next year, Women's T&F to 4 (from 5.9) and Men's T&F to 2.5 (from 3.5). Catamounts AD Schulman indicates a $180K savings from the reductions. Three full-time positions in the athletic department were also cut, one each in communications, facilities and AC positions. (link); UMass Lowell will drop Volleyball, but honor the current scholarships. AD Casey: "We hope these student-athletes will continue their education with us, but we know how important volleyball is to them. We will do everything we can to help them find the best fit." (link)
Boise State will begin providing video replay to Athletic Training staff during FB games, following the lead of league foe Air Force. System that will run about $10K in start-up costs will be tested today during the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. AFA Asst. Athletic Trainer Marsh says Boise's influence could push the Mountain West to install the system across membership "to make it easier on the staffs as they travel." Boise Assoc. AD for Sports Performance, Health and Wellness Paul emphasizes that "we need that at every conference school." (link)
Former Baylor FB HC Briles has been granted an extension by the NCAA for his response to the September notice of allegations handed down from Indy. This means the NCAA's response and verdict will likely be delayed until April. "Sources indicated both Briles and Baylor are confident no major penalty will be given." (link); St. John's Women's Volleyball HC cited for "failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance" and the school was found to have "failed to monitor it's women's volleyball program." Penalties: two years of probation starting yesterday, one-year show cause, $10K fine, 5% reduction in official visits, two-week ban in off-campus recruiting and a self-imposed reduction of one scholarship during last academic year. (link)

(link); The seventh edition of NCAA Weekly Whistles focuses on "reducing physicality to created freedom of movement" and "traveling - find the pivot foot." (link); New Hampshire will move forward with phase two of renovating the James "Red" Hayes '32 Football Locker Room, a $1M endeavor that should be done by August. (link); The Dec. 8 WBB game between South Carolina and Duke that was postponed due to a winter storm will likely be made up March 14 or 15, which of course falls after conference tourneys, but before the NCAA Tournament begins. (link); Syracuse has sold out of it's Camping World Bowl allotment. (link); Teamworks adds the NFL's Tennessee Titans to its portfolio. (link); The arrest affidavit for Kansas FB student-athlete Williams indicates he allegedly punched a female in the stomach and grabbed her by the throat. It also says the alleged victim showed police officers text messages of Williams admitting to punching her in the arms. (link)
