January 13 – “History of Hartman Reserve” Sarah Carter has spent the last two years creating a digital archive from Hartman photos, documents, and artifacts that soon will be available to the public. Sarah will talk about the pre-history of the land, the YMCA camp that was created in 1938 through a financial gift from John C. Hartman, and the events that shaped Hartman since Black Hawk County purchased the area in 1976.
The Outdoors
Birds depend on constant sources of food to help them stay warm and active throughout winter. Therefore, they are relatively easy to attract to properly-filled and maintained bird feeders. There are two main reasons why millions of people spend their time and money providing food for birds: 1) they want to help birds find food and survive, especially during winter, and, 2) they want to attract birds to areas where they can see and enjoy them up close. Experts at pet supply stores and farm supply stores can help you select feeders and appropriate seed. More information can be found in this publication by Iowa Association of Naturalists: Iowa Winter Birds. Hartman has 15 feeders outside the West Wing of the Interpretive Center that are viewable from inside (see photo). The bird feeder area will be developed in the Spring through a grant from the Prairie Rapids Audubon Society (PRAS). Thank you to Tractor Supply for donating the feeders and PRAS for their support of this project!
"He who marvels at the beauty of the world in summer will find equal cause for wonder and admiration in winter."
- John Burroughs
Did you know?
American Goldfinches are the only finch that molts its body feathers twice a year, once in late winter and again in late summer. Females and all winter birds (see photo) are more dull but identifiable by their conical bill; pointed, notched tail; wingbars; and lack of streaking. During molts they look bizarrely patchy. A sign of approaching warm months is the brightening yellow of male goldfinches.
