THE HIGHLIGHTS

The Trump team is feeling the chaos.

TELL ME MORE.

The other day, Prez Trump suddenly tweeted that he was pulling the US military from Syria. And added that the only reason the US was ever in Syria was to fight ISIS - which he alleged had now been defeated in the area. A complete U-turn from everything the Trump team had previously been saying. The reaction...was not good. Yesterday, it got even worse.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Defense Sec James Mattis said ‘that’s it, I’m out’ and quit. And said the Prez deserves a defense sec that actually agrees with him. Yes, this is about Syria. Mattis was reportedly “vehemently opposed” to Trump’s decision - something he made very very clear in his resignation letter, which pretty much criticizes Trump for everything. Lawmakers were not happy about this. And said Mattis’ retirement comes as extra “scary” news during an already-scary time. Because, stability.

ANYTHING ELSE?

Yesterday, it came out that Prez Trump ordered half the American troops in Afghanistan - about 7,000 people - back to the US. Not a typo. Hundreds of troops are apparently already on their way home. The announcement reportedly came at the same time as Trump’s Syria decision. And is leaving literally everyone scratching their heads. Plus just a teensy bit worried. Read: a lot. As in Sen Lindsay Graham (R-SC) said a withdrawal from Afghanistan now would mean “a second 9/11.” You read that right.

SO…?

It’s still unclear why the US is ditching Syria - and now Afghanistan. What is clear: not many at the White House are happy about it. TBD, TBD, TBD.

THE ACTION

POLITICS: Recently, Prez Trump said ‘just kidding’ and didn’t sign off on the Senate’s stop-gap funding bill. Reminder: for weeks, Trump’s been saying he’d only approve a budget plan that included $5 billion for his border wall. Something the Senate did not want to include. The Prez apparently said he’d back down, but yesterday, he shook his head to the new funding bill. Now, Congress is scrambling to put together a deal that’ll make both lawmakers and Trump happy - before the gov shuts down. In other news, the Trump team just reached a deal that’d force asylum seekers to wait in Mexico as cases are being processed. Problem, since many cases take months or years before closing. Hi, controversy.

WORLD: Yesterday, the Democratic Republic of Congo said ‘presidential election? What’s that?’ and postponed the country’s election for another week. Quick refresher: back in 2016, the country’s prez - Joseph Kabila - was expected to let another leader take his place. He didn’t. Since then, the country’s presidential election has been constantly delayed due to violence and unrest. Now, it looks like the election is being delayed once again. Speaking of which, there are now 560 cases of Ebola in Congo. And the number keeps rising. Meanwhile, the UK is investigating a new (and unexplained) spike in a polio-like illness. Stay tuned.

BIZ: The stock market isn’t getting any better. Yesterday, the Dow drop drop dropped nearly 500 points, putting it below 23,000 - something that hasn’t happened since October 2017. This comes during increasing concerns about a gov shutdown. In other news, the Justice Dept just indicted two Chinese hackers after they allegedly carried out a Chinese gov campaign to steal trade secrets and other info from over a dozen gov agencies - including the US - around the world. Yes, really. This has reportedly been going on for over a decade. No word yet on this from the Chinese gov.

WHAT TO KNOW

Hakuna Matata:” the phrase Zimbabweans are currently petitioning Disney to untrademark. Lots of worries.

SAY WHAT?

“It’s officially official” - Lana Condor, announcing the arrival of a ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ sequel. Dear Netflix, thank you.
