Noyce Fellows Reconvene

Earlier this semester, Noyce Teaching Fellows and Master Teaching Fellows gathered to engage in their ongoing work as they have for a number of years now. These math and science teachers meet throughout the year to build a community of colleagues and to engage in sustained reflection about their students and teaching practices. On a recent Saturday, Noyce participants shared ideas and mapped out a plan to generate case studies focused on issues that are important to their own goals as teachers in high-needs schools. They also worked to plan other activities for the year, including creating a book club focused on issues of equity and a problem-solving club focused on helping all students gain access to deep mathematical content. Learn more about the Noyce Fellowship program here, and hear Tom Snarsky, Brian Boyd and Cara Joyce talk about their work as Noyce Fellows.

Art Educator Featured in Boston Voyager

Melanie Blood, an MAT in Art Education alum, 2011, was recently written up in the Boston Voyager. In the article, when asked about her work, she states, "My inspiration has shifted a bit since I became an educator. I am continually inspired by my everyday environment as a white female teacher in one of the largest urban schools on the East Coast. This culturally wealthy but economically challenged and often traumatized world is one that I am constantly navigating. My role and my place in this equation is one that I both value and constantly reflect upon. This space is where my narratives are born, where inspiration is attained and where my creativity flourishes - to me, this is what sets me apart from other artists." Read about her success and career as an artist and an Art Educator.

Congratulations, Lama!

Lama Jaber, who earned her PhD in Science Education from Tufts in 2014 and is currently teaching at Florida State University, was recently awarded a CAREER Grant from the National Science Foundation for her project, "Cultivating Teachers' Epistemic Empathy to Promote Responsive Teaching." Classics Educators Open House

In October, Classics faculty member Susan Setnik organized the Classics Open House for Educators. An enthusiastic, supportive group of current teachers and graduate students attended. The current graduate students enjoyed hearing stories from current teachers (and Tufts alumni) related to the job search, working in schools, and the ins and outs of classroom teaching. In the new year, there will be a Middle School Latin Teachers Workshop. More info to come.

Education Faculty Works With New Graduate Program

Silas Pinto, Co-Director of the School Psychology Program, is one of two Core Seminar Instructors in the new interdisciplinary Diversity and Inclusion Leadership graduate program. When asked about his work with the program, Silas said, "The program addresses a growing need for expertise in the field. I am looking forward to continuing the conversations about how to integrate the theoretical frameworks for diversity and inclusion work into practical experiences for our students. I chose to participate in the program because it has great promise for making tangible changes in our surrounding communities and in our campuses as we prepare future leaders to engage with this challenging work of asking the difficult questions and dismantling systems of oppression." Read more about the program in the Tufts Daily and Tufts Now articles.

Congratulations, Shameka!

The Faculty Research Awards Committee (FRAC) has awarded Education Faculty Shameka Powell a Summer Faculty Fellowship for their project "Getting Off Track: Misalignment between district-level constructions of and school-site implementations of de-tracking policy.” The committee "voted with enthusiasm" to award the fellowship. When asked about the work they plan to do, Shameka said,"I am quite excited about this project and how it's coming together. With the award fellowship, there are two things I plan to do. One, I plan to get even deeper into analyzing policy documents. And two, I plan to interview administrators, educators, and school support staff to see how they understand the de-tracking policy." Way to go, Shameka!
