The first ARC publication in हिन्दी (Hindi) has arrived! The Hindi version of the Accountability Note Learning to Sustain Change: Mitanin Community Health Workers Promote Public Accountability in India illustrates how the CHW program of the Chhattisgarh state government in central India—known as Mitanin—has developed a learning strategy that permits Mitanins to enable sustained action on public accountability, whilst simultaneously providing health services and education, and linking communities with government healthcare services. Samir Garg of State Health Resource Centre together with ARC researcher Suchi Pande, produced this from dialogue that started in the June 2017 learning exchange on CHW Voice, Power and Citizen’s Right to Health. Samir has also written the majority of the Hindi version (डाउनलोड हिन्दी).

Event: Movements, Power and Accountability: Grassroots Organizing Perspectives

On November 2, ARC and JASS co-hosted a panel discussion on Movements, Power and Accountability: Grassroots Organizing Perspectives from Asia, Africa and Latin America. Panelists included Joy Aceron (Philippines), Paulina Culum (Guatemala), Nani Zulminarni (Indonesia) and Lucy Mazingi (Zimbabwe). This event launched of a new Working Paper in which lead author Nani Zulminarni, founder of PEKKA, documents Movement-building for Accountability: Learning from Indonesian Women’s Organizing which brings fresh and re-imagined language, analysis, and strategy ideas to the transparency, participation, and accountability (TPA) field. For video of the event see our YouTube channel (apologies for the sub-optimal quality). You might also like this short video interview of Nani Zulminarni produced by American University.

In Case You Missed It (ICYMI) 2018

This was a prolific year for ARC, supporting the production of 14 new and diverse knowledge products with 21 collaborators (beyond ARC team/advisors). For the full list, visit our publications page. I would like to specifically highlight the book Going Vertical, edited by Joy Aceron of G-Watch. Many other products can be accessed via ‘resources’ tab of each publication – such as this interview with Francis Isaac or the brief video documentary produced by CEGSS.

We organized four events in Washington DC this year – including a learning exchange for indigenous interpreters and indigenous rights advocates. ARC team members also accepted invitations to several convenings and events organized by others. One highlight would be the keynote address at the TICTec 2018 on the political construction of accountability keywords: lessons from action research.

In 2018 we deepened collaborations with partners including Support for Advocacy and Training to Health Initiatives-SATHI in India’s Maharastra state, Consejo Nacional de Paz Afrocolombiana-CONPA in Colombia and started a new dedicated research project on “Sandwich Strategies: Comparative Analysis of Institutional Change in the Global South” with new partner Center for Democracy and Development-CDD in Nigeria. We hope to share more developments on all those projects in 2019.

Please share with colleagues who may be interested to sign up for future monthly updates highlighting our latest publications and the strategic accountability work of partner organizations around the world. You can also follow us on @AcctResearchCtr or Facebook. We always welcome introductions, invitations for thought partnership and collaboration.

Happy holidays from the ARC team and we’ll see you with more updates and news from our partners and collaborations in 2019!

With Regards,
