LECTURE

Monday 14 January 2019

Crime & Punishment: Adam and Eve in Medieval Art

(due to unforeseen circumstances, the earlier advertised lecture has had to be changed)

This lecture, by Sally Dormer, explores the concept of Original Sin, Adam and Eve’s disobedience to God in the Garden of Eden, which dominated theological thought and teaching throughout the Middle Ages.

It also influenced the way in which women were regarded in medieval society. When was the iconography of the Fall of Man devised and where was it derived from? What type of fruit did Adam and Eve eat from the Tree of Knowledge? And why is the serpent often given the head of a woman in images of the Fall?

These, and other issues, will be explored through a variety of medieval wall-paintings, sculpture, stained glass, goldsmiths’ work and mosaics.
