TAF Newsletter #6

December 2018

Dear TAF supporters and friends,

The end of the year is fast approaching, and despite this busy time it is our hope you will have some spare moments to read our newsletter.

2018 was again an extremely packed year for TAF, filled with more than 40 educational and awareness events. We are positive to see the results and the change they have created.

Plastic pollution has been the environmental topic of the year, and not without reason. We all are aware how the effects of plastic are destroying our planet and, in the end, ourselves.

Time is running out, and it is now more urgent than ever for all of us to implement a plastic-free living!

We must not forget that the ocean delivers up to 85% of our oxygen.
By saving the ocean and its marine life, we save our children and ourselves – we must all act now!

TAF is doing everything it can to create awareness of how important it is for us all to make changes.
Online media is a great way of spreading the news so please forward this newsletter to your friends and tell them about our work at TAF - The Animal Fund.

If you would like to donate or take part in our events, please check out our website at www.theanimalfund.net and find the latest news on our Facebook page.
Only together we can make a difference!

Thank you so much for your support,

Berit Legrand, and everyone at TAF  The Animal Fund
NEWS
THANK YOU
First of all, we would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers who have been involved and contributed to the many events and achievements of TAF this year.

You are extremely important, make a huge difference and are essential for improving our world - Thank YOU!

Please see below for photos of our volunteers and members in some of our events this second half of 2018.
TAF's ongoing campaign against the
Plastic Bottle

Since more than 2 years we have hosted over 69 events including conferences, workshops, beach and ocean clean-ups, endless trying to inform the children and the general public about the danger of continuing using plastic bottles.
The world produces currently 1 million plastic bottles every minute. It takes more than 450 years for a plastic bottle to degrade.

SOLUTION:
  • For the government and local authorities: install more water fountains everywhere.
  • For the general public: use other alternatives like stainless steel bottles, glass or bamboo and install a water filter at home.

THIS IS EASY TO CHANGE  .... REMEMBER WE DIDN'T HAVE PLASTIC BOTTLES 50 YEARS AGO!

One must never forget that action and change start with ourselves, we can all help and every personal change has its impact!

CAPTIVITY

100 whales found captured in Russian Bay: shipped to Chinese marine parks
Orcas are sold for over $6 million, creating a lucrative business selling whales to China's 60 plus marine parks. Read more

TAF works hard to make the public aware of the cruelty and exploitation of marine life that serve financial incentives around the world. Via our countless presentations, conferences and online media we explain the impact of a single ticket purchase to a marine park!

Whale watching - a huge industry!
Since the 50's, Whale watching has become an immense business. The boat traffic in most whale watching places has becoming horrendous. If there are guidelines, these are not respected as each company only wants to get as close to the whales as possible, meaning that the whales who come to feed, breed or rest are disturbed non-stop.
TAF visited this time Skjervøy in Norway. Up to 50 boats are chasing the Orcas and Snorkelers are surrounding the Orcas to "swim" with them Read more

WHALING

1,500 tonnes of Icelandic whale meat on the way to Japan
146 whales were hunted by Hvalur hf, Iceland’s whaling company, during the summer whaling season. (144 endangered fin whales and 2 rare blue-fin hybrids). Most of the meat has been sent to Japan for consumption… mostly for sushi. Whale meat is toxic and dangerous to consume.  One still wonders.. who is killing who in the end!  Read more

A new TAIJI in Norway?

Dolphin hunt in Japan is a fact and despite the documentary "The Cove", there is unfortunately no attempt to stop it.

Sadly, it is not only Japan who are hunting dolphins but many other countries as well, where the meat is sold for food and fish bait. Recently, articles in the Norwegian press indicated that groups within the nation are attempting to legalize the capture and killing of dolphins. Norway is still among the  top whale hunters in the world. Read more

Plastic in the High Seas?

Does the plastics also reach the most remote areas, like the High Seas far from shore or inhabitable and almost unexplored places far as above 70º degrees North in our planet?  Read the report from Belen Garcia Ovide; TAF’s marine biologist.

Our world is all we have, so we must look after it. Always remember to:
- Reduce
- Recycle

  • Pick up our trash so the ocean stays free of it
  • Use canvas bags instead of plastic
