SmartPhones4Water December 2018 Update!

SmartPhones4Water (S4W) leverages the power of citizen science, mobile technology, and young researchers to improve lives by strengthening our understanding and management of water. This past year we've been busy continuing work on our first project in Nepal (S4W-Nepal), and looking ahead to next year we excitedly anticipate beginning additional projects in new areas! Keep reading to find out what we've been up to, what we're looking forward to and how you can be a part of it! We appreciate your interest and support! :)

3rd Annual MoChWo Conference!

S4W-Nepal partnered with the Kathmandu Institute of Applied Sciences to host the second annual Symposium on Citizen Science for a Sustainable Mountain Future as part of the third annual Mountains in a Changing World (MoChWo) conference, which was held in Kathmandu on the 9th and 10th of October this fall.  The vision for the symposium was to form a collaboration space for everyone interested in citizen science and participatory research in all disciplines associated with mountain ecosystems. It was a wonderful time, and we're excited to share some research posters and a reflection from the Symposium:
  1. Citizen Science Based Rainfall Monitoring
  2. Perception vs. Reality: Motivating Citizen Scientists in the Kathmandu Valley
  3. The Brink of Extinction: Quantifying the Stories of Stone Spouts in the Kathmandu Valley
  4. Can Citizen Scientists Generate Reliable Ground Truth Observations of Land Use?
  5. Citizen science in hydrology: A case study of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal
  6. MoChWo Symposium Review

Look Ahead to 2019!

In the New Year, we are looking forward to the following opportunities:

  • Continuing to expand our work in Nepal through S4W-Nepal
  • Starting new projects in not just one but two new countries (and continents!)
    • S4W-Netherlands
    • S4W-California in the USA
We are currently in talks and planning for these new projects and look forward to keeping you up-to-date as things continue to develop! :)

There will be new opportunities to participate (especially in some of these new projects), but there is also information on how you can support our ongoing work in Nepal at the bottom of the newsletter.

S4W-Nepal Stories!

Every so often, someone writes a story about our work. We also publish either an interview with a citizen scientist or science story about what we're doing through our website from time to time. You can check them all out below! The ones in italics are new ones that have come out since our last newsletter :)

Ways YOU Can Get Involved!

If you'd like to participate or invest in what we're doing, we are always looking for old SmartPhones (or dumb phones) or monetary donations. With either type of donation, 100% of your donation will go directly to on-the-ground work in Nepal! You can find out more information about these opportunities below.

Cell Phone Donations
Do you have an old SmartPhone somewhere in your home collecting dust? Well, we can use it! Immediately!  Many people living in more remote areas of Nepal are interested in becoming citizen scientists, but don't have a compatible GSM Android phone with working camera and GPS required to collect data. Your old SmartPhone can make a difference by providing an educational or employment opportunity for a citizen scientist and by generating critical water data!

Each citizen scientist records their data observations using a SmartPhone app developed using the ODK platform (more on this here). As our team of citizen scientists continues to expand, we are looking for phone donations that can be used by our team to collect these important data. All phones that are able to be used in Nepal will be given to citizen scientists to record data observations; all other phones will be recycled and 100% of the funds generated will go towards continuing work in Nepal.

Phone donations from the USA or internationally can be shipped to the following address:

Monetary Donations
If you don't have an old cell phone, not to worry, you probably have some money and we're willing to take that too :)

We have a donation account set up through CrowdRise that you can find here. Apart from the percentage of every donation that CrowdRise takes for their operations, 100% of your donation will go directly to on-the-ground work in Nepal (i.e. S4W-Nepal salaries and expenses). No money will be used for western (i.e. USA) overhead, including salaries or expenses. If you'd like to donate more than $100, please email us (info@smartphones4water.org) to find out how to donate directly to SmartPhones4Water.

Social Media
We are always on the lookout for support on social media! We have Facebook and Twitter accounts and would love to have your support through clicks, likes, thumbs up, high-fives, retweets, and sharing with all of your friends and family!

...And More
Depending on where you call home, we are excited about potential new opportunities and avenues to support SmartPhones4Water and participate in our work with us to improve lives by improving our understanding and management of water resources! Stay tuned!

If you've gotten this far, thanks for reading our entire newsletter! Keep an eye out for more updates via social media and don't hesitate to reach out! We'd love to hear from you :)
