May 2019 be a great year for each of you! I can hardly believe we are approaching the end of another year. 2018 brought us some unique challenges, and at times some great rewards. The outlook for 2019 appears to hold more challenges in store. Nevertheless, before we get there, enjoy the holiday season and find time for family. My hope is that this New Year is a very rewarding year for you. May 2019 bring you abundant happiness and good health!                                     Joel

Crop Advantage Series in January - Don't miss the chance to attend one of the 2019 Crop Advantage meetings in January! The first one will be held at NCC near Sheldon on January 3. Other local dates and sites include Storm Lake on January 8, Okoboji on January 15, Le Mars on January 22, or Denison on the 30th. Each site has a different agenda, so see details of workshop options for each site at the Crop Advantage website. Attendees must attend the entire meeting to receive private pesticide applicator recertification, which is now included in the meeting registration fee. Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) credits are available. This is the only time of the year when I can get this many ISU Specialists together in one location. Take advantage of the opportunity! Here is the agenda for the January 3 session at NCC near Sheldon:

Early registration for each location is $50; registrations received less than seven days prior to the meeting or on-site are $60 ($50 price is good through midnight of December 28 for Sheldon!). Registration includes lunch, proceedings booklet, and optional private applicator recertification or CCA credits. For online registration, or information about this and other Crop Advantage meetings across Iowa, visit www.cropadvantage.org or contact any northwest Iowa Extension office.

** Private Pesticide Continuing Instruction has begun for the winter.  The entire schedule for the nine counties where I will be teaching this winter is located here. Additionally, if you or someone you know needs to take any of the pesticide applicator tests this winter, check this web page for dates and locations where IDALS will be offering these tests.

**Confinement Site Manure Applicator workshops for 2019 are set for January and February. Iowa law requires confinement site manure applicators to attend two hours of continuing education each year of their three-year certification period, or take and pass an exam once every three years. Due to uniform certification deadlines, applicators are encouraged to attend workshops prior to March 1 to avoid being assessed a late fee of $12.50. To find the dates of a site near you, click here. NOTE: There is an ERROR on one location – the Osceola County site in Sibley on January 28 will begin at 1:30 p.m., not as listed in the brochure. Sorry for any inconvenience.

**Commercial Manure Applicator certification for 2019 will be available from 9 am to noon at 76 Iowa Extension offices on January 3. For Dry Manure Applicators, a session for you will be held at the Sioux County Extension Office in Orange City at 1 pm on February 19, or in Storm Lake on February 26. For more details see this flier on commercial certification locations.

Iowa Land Value Report Released - This past week ISU released the most recent Iowa Land Value survey results. For the third time in four years the land value average across the state has dropped, but only by .8%. Details for this report, including county averages, can be found here.  Don’t forget about the ISU Ag Decision Maker web site for helping you and many farm management topics.

The Center for Ag Law and Taxation at ISU has legal reviews of many different issues that affect us in agriculture. There are also news articles printed frequently, such as the “Congress Sends 2018 Farm Bill to the President” article posted last Saturday reviewing the basics included in the new farm bill. Take a look!
