Education Like No Other

Looking Back, Looking Forward: A Special New Year Edition of the UWC Newsletter

Dear friends of UWC,

The below video summarises our UWC highlights from 2018. Really there is not much to add to those images as they remind us of this colourful, exciting, intense, interesting, at times challenging and at times breathtakingly wonderful year at UWC.

All there is to add is a big "thank you" to you, our dear readers! Thank you for your support of UWC as students, alums, staff, volunteers, partners and donors. Thank you for the countless hours you have committed to this educational movement. Thank you for your creativity, hard work, dedication and trust. And thank you for your passionate belief that together we can make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. Thank you for being part of UWC.

With warmest wishes for a peaceful end of 2018, and an energetic start of 2019. May it be a happy and healthy year for each of you individually - and a fantastic one for us all collectively and for UWC. It is good to have you on our side.

Hannah

2018 was an exciting and busy year for the UWC movement. In the spirit of looking back and looking forward, start by revisiting some of UWC’s most important moments and achievements of 2018 in the video below - then take a look at what we at UWC International are excited for in the new year.

10 Things UWC International Looks Forward to in 2019:

1. Going (even more) global!

2019 will be a year of change for us at UWC International: some current staff members will be moving to Germany, as a second UWC International office will open in Berlin. Meanwhile, the London branch of UWC International will be relocating in March to a new Central London office space. Several UWC International staff members also work from different parts of the world (Colombia, France, Belgium, the Netherlands) and we expect this number to increase in 2019.

2. New leadership!

Starting in 2019, the UWC International Board will have a new Chair: Musimbi Kanyoro, who is taking over from Sir John Daniel. We thank Sir John Daniel for his dedicated service to UWC since 2013 - and we are excited to welcome Dr. Kanyoro into the UWC movement.

3. A second UWC school in Africa!

The UWC movement’s network of schools and colleges is likely to get a new addition this year: International School Moshi in Tanzania is on its way to being accredited as UWC school. The school is working to become a UWC in time for the first UWC national committee-selected students to start in September 2019.

4. Rethinking UWC Education!

In 2019, we will continue our focus on UWC education and consider what we need to renew, refresh and rethink. We will be holding a series of open in-person and online workshops focusing on education, as part of a curriculum development project that examines what we do and how we can do it better. UWC staff members will also come together at UWC Maastricht and UWC Mahindra College to collaborate on a deeper analysis of the purpose and pedagogy of UWC. Stay tuned for more information, and get involved!

5. Working together!

Different initiatives across the UWC movement will enable all its members to work together more collaboratively and effectively, both in-person and through improved technologies. Early in 2019, a workshop will be held to increase the fundraising capacity of UWC national committees - followed by a meeting of UWC Heads, Chairs and national committee representatives in March. We are also working on a shared UWC movement-wide database, a revamp of the UWC Hub and other online resources!

6. Even more scholarships!

Over 80% of UWC national committee-selected students in the IB Diploma Programme years receive financial support, allowing access to a UWC education to be independent of socio-economic background. We want to keep strengthening our scholarship programme even further. Fundraising will therefore be one of our key areas in 2019, with a special focus on empowering UWC national committees to fundraise locally.

7. New UWC students!

Many UWC national committees across the globe are currently selecting the next generation of UWC students and the new UWC Global Selection Programme (GSP) has its final selection weekends in early 2019 (London 26/27 January, Toronto 2/3 February, and Bangkok 9/10 February). We are crossing our fingers for all candidates, and can’t wait to welcome the next generation of UWC changemakers in 2019!

8. Studying UWC’s impact with Harvard!

Project Zero of the Harvard Graduate School of Education is currently conducting the first-ever longitudinal study of current and former UWC students to understand the impact of a UWC education. In 2019, all UWC alumni will be invited to take part in the Impact Study through online surveys and interviews. This is your opportunity to shape UWC education - and all intercultural education - going forward, so be sure to participate.

9. Supporting UWC volunteers!

Did you know that UWC national committees (NCs) are eligible for grants from the NC Fund to support their work? Since 2017, over £180,000 has been invested across 52 projects, with 54% of national committees benefitting. The next round of applications for NC Grants opens on 15 January, and the deadline to apply is 15 February 2019. For more information, national committee members can visit the NC Space.

10. A new look for the UWC Hub!

The UWC Hub, the online space for the UWC community, will receive a new look and feel in 2019. With improved appearance, features and functionalities, the Hub will be more user-friendly and be even better for connecting UWCers across the movement. Stay tuned for more information.

Thank you for reading!
