Sanctuary Coffee: In the News

External Recognition

Recently, Sanctuary Coffee has been getting external recognition from the Calgary Press. Sanctuary Coffee has been featured in Live Wire Calgary, an online publication of local news in the Calgary area, as well as across Alberta. Live Wire Calgary writes:

Minister Greg Glatz said the venture has been so successful they’re making plans to build a permanent one and other churches are now coming to him for ideas to bring people back into the space
.(...)

Glatz said their cafe was built to accomplish three things: Address social isolation, boost employability of their volunteers who are often newcomers and ensure a vibrant future for the church. That last point means opening their doors and talking to people from all different backgrounds

This is great news for our cafe, as it means that the word about what Knox is accomplishing through social enterprise is reaching the external community at a larger capacity, and then elevating our operations to another level!

Opportunity Knox

Next Steps

At the end of November, our ad hoc group for the pilot of the Opportunity Knox team held and information meeting for prospective leaders. during this event - which included supper - these prospective leaders and the ad hoc group discussed why we are developing the Opportunity Knox Team, the responsibilities of that team, and answered any questions that were raised. What will happen next will be the filling out of a short Opportunity Knox Volunteer Questionnaire Form by the interested parties, which will indicate why they are interested in this volunteer position. In early 2019, the ad hoc group will proceed with interviewing the potential leaders, with the goal of getting this team up and running shortly thereafter.

Tn preparation for these interviews, our ad hoc group has already conducted a pilot interview in early December. Using the information gleaned from this pilot interview, they will refine and consider changes to the interviewing process for volunteer leadership roles going forward. As well, the information gathered has allowed the ad hoc group to give positive recommendations to Council.

Creating a Post-Colonial Church

An update from Dave

As we celebrate peace on earth at Christmas, it is probably worth a thought or two about how peace on earth is built.

As part of our Next 1100 Days initiatives, Knox has been a founding member of the Calgary Interfaith Council, and has worked to develop interfaith relationships in the city. Developing interfaith relationships, and exploring the theology behind those relationships, is part of our pursuit of a post-colonial Christianity, and also a part of developing missional partnerships in all we do.

The UN Interfaith Harmony Week is coming up, with opening ceremonies at City Hall on the evening of Thursday, January 31. The theme this year will be "We Choose Civility: Listening, Caring, Engaging." It reflects our active commitment to promote civility in all public forums and to highlight the essential components to civil discourse as honest and non-judgmental listening, authentic caring for others, and formulating a respectful and engaging response. As part of the Interfaith Council, we believe that civil, respectful dialogue can be the foundation of peace – in interfaith relations, but also in our political lives, our family lives, our life here in our own church.

We will be considering a “civility pledge” in our own worship at 10:30 on Sunday February. And speaking of post-colonial, the Wisdom Centre here in Calgary is hosting Travis Enright on the weekend of February 8-9, on Reconciliation and Worldview. Wisdom Centre events have been of consistently high quality, and this one is right on target for our 1100 Days.

Please check it out at the Wisdom Center's Website, and consider being a part of this event!
