Here we are in the countdown of days to the winter solstice. You can bet it has more meaning this year than most for Garden State farmers. 2018 was the worst weather year for farming in two generations. The solstice will mark the darkest day of the year, the official moment of stillness where the growing cycle lets out it's final exhale. Since we we good and ready for this year to finish itself off already, we're thinking it's about time! Then we make strides forward to our next round of farming with ever increasing minutes of sunlight, ever increasing hope while pouring over seed catalogs, a steady gaze towards future goals and a more firm grasp on how to navigate the crazy. This really is the time of year we have to replenish ourselves, and take care of ourselves and our families before we get that spring feeling. Then we will start, without even knowing it, walking harder, breathing faster, pumping blood with more urgency. The whole natural world here does the same, and we're lucky enough in our work to be so immersed in that that we are swept alongside. But for now...our pulses are slower and preparing for rest, with deeper breaths, meandering strolls, and hazy thoughts of how we'll do it all better next year. We'll lounge in that for just this solstice moment.
It wouldn't be right to keep you all out of the loop- Farmer Jess is getting married on the farm on the solstice this year! We'll share some pics next week!
Eat well, enjoy the winter solstice and your holidays,
Your farmers
