Next Meeting: Monday, January 7, 2019

Our fellow TWG member, Neil Haist, will be talking about embellishment techniques. More details are available below.

FINAL REMINDER: If you haven't already done so, remember to bring cash or a cheque so you can renew your membership at the meeting. Refer to the Guild's Membership webpage for further information.

Neil Haist - Getting your work to look better

To "embellish" means to improve appearance by adding decoration. On Monday, January 7, Neil will share with us what he's learned about embellishing wood-turned pieces.
Neil will discuss texturing, wood-burning, colouring, gold leaf, and painting. He will bring examples of his work to illustrate his talk, stimulate discussion and inspire your own creativity. During his demonstration, Neil will show how to apply some of these techniques on previously prepared turnings.

Neil dabbled in woodworking during his career as an engineer in Toronto. He decided to revisit a school shop experience in woodturning as an interest after he retired. Neil has been turning for about 10 years and enjoys exploring the craft from new angles. He is fortunate to have a woodlot which provides an ample supply of windblown trees to feed his lathe and has also enjoyed turning the more unusual woods available from the TWG raffles.
President's Challenge
For our January 7 meeting, the President's Challenge is: make a wig stand. In fact, make many -- you are not limited to one entry.

The President will judge the submissions and may award a first prize, second prize, third prize, and honourable mention. After the judging, wig stand entries will be donated to cancer patients.

Future Challenges will be announced on the Club's Calendar page. Keep watching that page for updates.
Hands-On sessions
Don't forget that the new hands-on program begins this month. It's more than just an introduction to woodturning. Any member who would like coaching on a turning technique or problem can drop in. For more information, go to the website page for Hands-On Lessons.
News
The latest edition of AAW's e-Zine, "Keep Turning News," is available online. It includes many written articles of interest to woodturners and links to several videos. Editor's pick: read about the 25th Anniversary Exhibit of the White House Collection of American Crafts and watch the video to see some amazing woodturned pieces.
The Toronto Woodturners Guild encourages all its members to not only attend the Symposium, but join and support the AAW.
Sad News
Hanna Schafron, the wife of Rudi Schafron, passed away suddenly on December 26 in Collingwood. TWG VP Joe Kappy said, "Rudi is a large presence in our woodturning community, and he was always accompanied by Hanna. Seeing them together always gave you a strong sense of family… her warm company will be missed." For further information and to sign her Book of Memories, please visit the memorial webpage at Carruthers & Davidson Funeral Home.
Last Meeting Report
Heard of spinning straw into gold? On Monday, December 3, Dave Bell showed us what he does when he finds a flaw or a crack in a piece that he's turning. Dave shared a few techniques he applies when he wants to change a problem into a design feature. One ingenious idea involved using plumbing components to help fill voids with epoxy.  Go to the Gallery page on the TWG website to see photos of Dave's presentation and other happenings that evening.
President's Message
It’s almost New Year’s Eve. Looking back on 2018 it's gratifying to see continued growth in the Guild – not only in numbers but also in quality of work. The entries for the Show & Tell table, President’s Challenge and Showcase have been great. Thanks to all who took part, and thanks also to all who simply showed up to look and learn. We leave 2018 with warm memories and new enthusiasm for 2019.
– Johan Guertsen
Show & Tell Table
Two TWG members admiring a turned piece at the Show & Tell table
Bringing your work to the Show & Tell table is a great way to share ideas and meet your fellow TWG members.

Bonus: an entry at the S&T table will get you two tickets for the raffle.
