Alston: As you know, Judge Wilken led a final hearing on the court case that could dramatically change college athletics or maintain the status quo. Four notable reporters were communicating via Twitter from inside the courtroom: Law360's Atkins (link), the San Francisco Daily's Cho (link), ESPN's Bonagura (link) & MLex's Swift (link). Key: "Judge Wilken says it seems 'pretty clear' there is antitrust violation, but she wants to know how egregious it is or how it could be quantified for the purpose of balancing it against any potential pro-competitive effects of it. […] Judge Wilken says it's more likely than not that paying athletes large sums - like a million or more - could create a bidding war among schools. She asks Berman if he is arguing that economic principles will prevent @NCAA conferences from allowing that to happen. He says yes. […] The athletes' counsel, Jeffrey Kessler of @WinstonLaw, is up, arguing that there hasn't been a drop in demand for college sports since the @NCAA moved from grant-in-aid to the cost-of-attendance model and created the Power Five conferences. […] Judge Wilken says she wants to focus on less-restrictive alternatives - meaning what would happen if she sides with the athletes. She says the athletes have offered three alternatives, one which bars the @NCAA from capping athletes' compensation. […] Judge Wilken says she has further questions but she's not going to be able to ask them. (They've been going for four hours.) She says she'll issue a ruling in short order. And now we wait!" Lots more.
Another twist in the CFP expansion narrative as The Athletic's Auerbach is back with direct comments from Big Ten Commish Delany, "The Big Ten would be happy to discuss structure issues with colleagues. It’s probably a good idea, given all of the conversations and noise around the issue, to have discussions with our colleagues. The Big Ten would definitely have conversations." Northwestern AD Phillips also chimes in, "What I would like to see is anything we can do to take it out of the boardroom and put it more back on the field and have the student-athletes decide it. I’m supremely confident that we can figure this out across all of our conferences across college football, and I think we can get it to a better place." LSU AD Alleva likes the current system, doesn't want to devalue to the regular season. North Carolina boss Cunningham: "It should guarantee access for at least five conferences and for another team that’s not in those conferences and have two at-large selections. That meets all the criteria we had hoped for — conference champions, and it also gives postseason opportunities for others. It would also give everyone a chance to compete in the postseason. That would give everyone hope at the end of the season that they be part of it. It would continue to grow the sport nationally, not just in a select few areas or schools." More, as candidly, I'm getting confused on who said what, when & on which agenda. (link)
SBD asks the question many are posing in UCF AD White's scheduling push, "Does UCF Have Leverage In Attempt To Schedule Series With Florida?" ESPN's Golic: "People want to look at Florida and say they’re trying to take advantage of them but that’s what negotiation is." SportsCenter lead Van Pelt's take, "Take the trip to the Swamp, kick their a**, come home for your game, and then go on the road and do it again. I just don’t see the downside. Attendance in the Swamp has been sliding a bit, take as many fans as you can, take over the joint. ... I don’t see how passing on this offer because you think you’re on equal footing to demand a home-and-home or nothing advances your cause." Also in the mashup, AAC Commish Aresco called SBJ's report of his league asking some schools to sign a grant of rights, "overblown" & not something he's done yet. (link)
Signing Day: 247Sports national recruiting analyst Biggins says of USC AD Swann, "Probably the most active AD I’ve ever seen. I’ve talked to several players and parents, and Lynn Swann is talking to them regularly. I’ve never heard of that before, an AD actually talking to the parents. This was after the Cal game, after the UCLA game, after Notre Dame, they’re saying, 'I’m talking to the man himself.' Swann was adamant to every parent I talked to that Helton was never going anywhere." (link); Here's a look at the total number offers extended by 'Power 5' programs. Top 5: Tennessee (440), Syracuse (437), Nebraska (413), Louisville (406), Ole Miss (403). P5 Average: 232. (link); Rivals.com national recruiting director Farrell says he's never seen so many elite West Coast recruits headed east, mainly to the SEC. Farrell: "California kids historically would go and take visits to SEC schools or Big Ten schools and then just stay home in the end. That isn’t happening with this group. […] If the Pac-12 doesn’t rebound next year, it will be in even bigger trouble." (link)
TCU boss Donati provides good context on some moving parts in Fort Worth, points to his tenure with the Horned Frogs prior to becoming AD as crucial to his working relationship with FB HC Patterson, especially in light of last year's issues surrounding former student-athlete Turpin & domestic violence issues, "It wasn’t a deal where we were trading texts and emails to figure it out. Gary and I met with the staff, with everyone that was involved, and here’s what happened. Be upfront and transparent about what happened." As a result, the department's incident reporting structure has changed to taking such situations "straight to the top." The Amon G. Carter Stadium additions are a couple of weeks behind, may not be 100% done for kick-off next August. Wants to spend his second year in the chair directly measuring student-athlete & fan experience. "Anything is possible, but I don't see it," that's on coming from Nike to Jordan Brand. Lots more. (link)
Facilities: Vermont's new arena gets a name, the "Tarrant Events Center," thanks to a $15M donation from longtime donors Rich and Deb Tarrant. Largest capital gift in school history. Catamounts AD Schulman says his team is "within a couple million dollars" of the $30M fundraising goal. (link); Yesterday, Delaware broke ground on its $60M effort to renovate the west side of Delaware Stadium and construct a 90K square-foot Whitney Athletic Center that will house academic space, athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine and nutrition offices. (link); Check out this aerial view of the ongoing renovation at Old Dominion's FB stadium. Lots has been torn down already. (link); Illinois Senior Assoc. AD for Development on how the Illini have raised $47M in the past year for capital projects, "They've donated knowing that this is a long play if you will, a long-term investment. People have given in support because they believe in the leadership. They feel comfortable with being stakeholders with the AD that's in the chair right now and with the decisions he's making. The first step is getting the infrastructure, facilities, staff, recruiting in place and positioning ourselves to be successful." (link)
Yahoo's Eisenberg goes in on the now-regular practice of fans & media digging up old social media by student-athletes & pro players that in some cases were posted long before they were even old enough to drive. A number of consultants chime in, including Fieldhouse Media's DeShazo, "Whatever school I go to, I’ll find the worst tweets from the kids sitting in that room. Whatever you can think of, I’ve probably shown it – racial, sexual, homophobic, profanity. It’s a funny moment, but I remind them I found these in five minutes. Then I ask them to imagine they’re interviewing for a job and that interviewer asks if these are their tweets?" This piece should probably be distributed to every student-athlete in your department. (link)
More specificity on MBB's changing recruiting landscape as the NCAA has identified the four sites for its youth development college camps next summer. Hosts: Houston (South), Illinois (Midwest), UConn (East) & Grand Canyon (West). Two sessions: July 23-25 & July 26-28. Up to 2,400 rising sophomores, juniors & seniors will be invited. (link); A MBB all-star team of sorts from the BIG EAST will represent the U.S. at next summer's Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru. Providence HC Cooley will lead the squad. Notable: "This represents the first time a team from a single Division l conference will represent the U.S. in the sport of men’s basketball in Pan American Games competition." (link)

New ECU AD Gilbert already pulling from Southern Miss as Golden Eagles Senior Assoc. AD for Administration Bevillard is headed to Greenville as Senior Assoc. AD for Administration/SWA. (link); WAC Commish Hurd hires longtime Big Sky leader Loghry as Senior Assoc. Commish. Loghry will oversee MBB, the league's finances & "other selected administrative functions." (link)
Former UConn MBB HC Ollie pushing for an emergency injunction from a U.S. District Court that would allow him to retain the right to sue the university on the grounds of his departure being racially motivated. Hearing set for December 28. Ollie's attorney: "I can’t understand why they (UConn) would not agree. It does them no harm whatsoever to say, ‘If you have this right, we’ll just waive it until after the arbitration.’ It’s just to be punitive, or, as we allege, retaliatory." From university spokesperson Reitz, "As UConn has stated from the outset, the university terminated Kevin Ollie’s employment due to violations of NCAA rules, pursuant to his employment agreement. Any claim to the contrary is without merit." (link)
"Rick Barnes, get the (expletive) out of here." That's Memphis MBB HC Hardaway at the end of a presser yesterday after he was asked about comments made by Tennessee boss Barnes in connection to the end-of-game scuffle last weekend & what Barnes saw as Tigers flopping. More: "I don’t know who Rick Barnes thinks I am but I’m not a dude that likes to mess around about anything. I just call it like I see it. No matter how he’s trying to make things seem, and I think it's kind of low class how he’s trying to downgrade my guys for flopping and all that. Man, come on, give me a break." (link); Here's video of a few potential flops Barnes was referring to. (link)
Memphis Assoc. AD for Sports Medicine Turner cited by Tennessee's board of athletic trainers for employees working without proper licenses. It's the second such issue in the last 30 months. The first incident resulted in a $1,600 fine. No official word from the university, other than to say it's a state matter & that any punishment handed down by the state was sufficient for the Tigers. Looks like the licensure of GAs is part of the story. (link)
More Personnel: South Carolina FB HC Muschamp will make $4.4M next season with $200K annual escalators taking his 2024 salary to $5.4M. Part of a new deal that also reworked his buyout, as he now owes USC $4M if he leaves after next season, $3.5M after 2020 and $3M after 2021. Some AC bumps, as well. (link); South Dakota State agrees to a new five-year deal with MBB HC Otzelberger, taking him through the 2022-23 season. (link); East Tennessee State Volleyball HC Devine leaves for the same role at Alabama. (link); Oregon will decide today whether to appeal WBB HC's Graves' two-game suspension and the vacating of track meets in which former sprinter Todd was academically ineligible. UO must respond to the NCAA by tomorrow. (link); Oregon State AD Barnes picks Mississippi State AHC Kagan to lead the Women's Soccer team in Corvallis. (link); Louisville Dance HC Sharp terminated due, in part, to "fiscal misconduct" with reports of $40K in missing deposits. (link); Former Louisville MBB Interim HC Padgett will work for ESPN starting in two weeks as an analyst for the Rhode Island vs. Saint Louis matchup. (link); Comparison HC buyout data as it sounds like Manchester United will spend $28M to sack notable manager Mourinho. (link)
Sports Gambling: The Washington D.C. Council gives sports wagering the green light. (link); No changes to the Tennessee Constitution will be needed to add sports gambling as long as the sport is based on skill and not predominantly on 'chance.'" (link); Caesars in New Jersey gets dinged $2K for allowing bets on the Kansas-Rutgers FB match-up earlier in the year. "New Jersey books are prohibited from taking bets on games involving in-state schools." (link)
Next year's Northwestern-Ohio State FB kick in Evanston will take place on a Friday night, much to the dismay of Wildcats HC Fitzgerald, "I understand why we’re doing this, but it does not make me happy. I still fundamentally believe that Fridays are for high school football." NU AD Phillips: "When you’re part of a conference, you take ownership to what was agreed upon in the last media rights deal. So if the TV partners want to move it from Saturday to Friday, we willingly accept that and will be excited about it. Of course Saturday is the day we really want to play the games, but this is college football in 2019." (link)
In follow-up to FB contract upgrades, South Carolina AD Tanner notes that FB boss Muschamp has given a gift to name a meeting room in the new Cyndi and Kenneth Long Football Operations Facility in his family's name. Six others did commitments of $250K or more. An added $10M push, on top of $30M already raised for the new space, will help to finance half of the upgrades to Williams-Brice Stadium. Move in date in early January. (link)
Louisville sold an average of 53,800 tickets per game for this past FB season, but the scanned average ends up around 32,235. Cards AD Tyra talks through ideas to improve both butts in seats & the overall fan experience at both FB & MBB. Says a monthly payment plan will be implemented for next year's FB package, more direct communication with students on coordinated cheers during games, keeping team intro videos & music fresh throughout a season, making it easier for fans to pass along tickets to friends/others when they can't make it to a game, "dynamic" & "variable" pricing all in the same sentence (so, not exactly sure what it means). More. (link)
Good read from MIT (DIII) AD Soriero on her view of leadership from the AD chair, "In its most basic incarnation, a leadership philosophy tells people: Here’s what I think my role is as a leader, here’s what you can expect from me, here’s what I expect from you, and here are the things that will attract negative attention. Any team will function better if everyone knows the expected behaviors and as a leader, you are clear about those expectations. […] A leader who commits, in writing, to a philosophy takes ownership and opens the conversation around what is best for the team and program. […] Once a leader has clearly stated and committed to a leadership philosophy, he or she is accountable to others to live up to those standards." (link)
New...: Website design for Arkansas thanks to partner WMT. 'Most Popular' section will show what fans are going to most, improved mobile functionality, improved facility pages, plus a 'Coming Up' rundown & more. (link); Video boards in the America First Event Center for Southern Utah. (link)
Also Noticed: Our condolences to the Florida State family as Dir. of Sports Nutrition Hrdlicka has passed away. (link); Here's an updated look at comparative MBB rankings: NET, RPI, KenPom, KPI, Sagarin, BPI & SOR. We'll be updating this daily around mid-day once the NET data comes out. (link); Georgia QB Fields has reportedly entered the transfer pool and could use the September incident - when former UGA Baseball student-athlete Sasser was accused of yelling racial slurs toward Fields - to play immediately. The waiver guidelines from the NCAA allow a student-athlete to forego the mandated year-in-residence if "the transfer is due to documented mitigating circumstances that are outside the student-athlete’s control and directly impact the health, safety and well-being of the student-athlete." (link); New on the AthleticDirectorU podcast is Georgetown AD Reed's chat on Student-Athlete Development with Executive Director of the Cooper Athletics Leadership Program Ozery. (link); Learfield Licensing Partners holiday marketing efforts and bowl game activations highlighted here, including giveaway days, #schoolwishlist social media campaigns and New Year's Resolutions videos that display activewear to coincide with your fitness goals. (link); For the fifth straight season, Texas Tech Baseball is sold out. (link); More from Lubbock as TTU garners Carnegie Tier One classification, making it one of the top 120 doctoral universities in the country. (link)
