Open House planned, public involvement underway for SW Multnomah/Garden Home Intersection Safety Project

(Jan. 16, 2019) The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has kicked off the outreach phase for the SW Multnomah/Garden Home Intersection Safety Project and we are excited to hear from residents about how this intersection can be improved. This intersection has several challenges including difficult sight distances, inadequate bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and multiple streets feeding into the intersection. Given these factors, the crash history at this location, and the significant number of people using this intersection, PBOT has initiated a project to either signalize this intersection or to construct a roundabout.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation expects to decide between roundabout and traffic signal later this spring. This decision will be grounded in available funding, feedback from residents, and technical feasibility. Want to hear the latest on this project? Join us at our open house on Thursday, January 17 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Garden Home Recreation Center (7475 SW Oleson Road).

The traffic signal option comes with a lower cost ($3.5-5.5 million), a quicker construction window, and offers the ability to coordinate signal timing with the traffic signal at SW Oleson Road and SW Garden Home Road.

The roundabout option has a cost range of $4.5-6.5 million. This higher cost is due to additional right of way that would be needed, greater storm water needs, and intersection realignment that would need to occur to make the roundabout work. All of these have trade-offs and advantages which is why we are looking to hear from community members about their preferences.
Multi-jurisdictional partnership
Working on a project with overlapping jurisdictional boundaries requires coordination and partnerships. PBOT is pleased to be coordinating this project with the following entities: Washington County Department of Land Use and Transportation, City of Beaverton, Beaverton School District, City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services, Portland Fire & Rescue, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, and TriMet.
Funding for this project comes from Washington County’s MSTIP program and the City of Portland’s Transportation System Development Charges.
Timeline & Next Steps
Later this spring PBOT will decide between roundabout and traffic signal, considering public feedback, available funding, and technical feasibility. Civil design will begin Summer 2019 and bid advertisement will occur Fall 2020. Finally, construction is expected to begin Spring 2021 and be complete Fall 2021.
