Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou kātoa te whānau whānui o te Kura Pokapū o Whakatū –
Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.

Nāku te rourou, nāu te rourou

Ka ora ai tātou katoa.   Tīhei mauriora!

2018 has been a great year, but it has also had its sadness.

We farewelled "KaariamaiPapa De Theirry who was a special little girl who was dearly loved in our kura.

“He putiputi kua katohia i te māra a Tāne”
She will be sadly missed and continue to hold a special place in our kura.

We have had much to celebrate throughout this year as well.

We have looked at ways in which we can build better partnerships with whanau and held some highly successful events to support that - including our first winter light festival, and record numbers to student learning conferences and Runanga Matua.

Behind the scenes  we have rolled out changes in the way we report that will mean smaller more frequent assessment information being updated on your child’s profile throughout the year, and a greater opportunity for students to share the work they are proud of.

We have redesigned the website and will go live with that next term.

The build for our new two class space has been started and we have been assured of another two to come.

Publicly we have had many successes -  academically, sporting, through our strong environmental kaupapa, our performances and our kapahaka… Tamariki Toa as most of you know has again won a place at the national primary schools competition and will travel to Hamilton next year to compete.
In the last two weeks alone we have seen performances by  the magnificent Tamariki Toa, our amazing choir, ( who have  joined Tamariki Toa and our band to put out a record this year … actually a peanut pendrive,... to showcase their skill), and our year six divas - who performed Super Stan to sell out audiences.

Privately we have had so many more  successes and they are reflected in each of our students... in the challenges and learning achieved this year.

Kia rewa rawa - we have indeed aimed high  - and succeeded.

We have done that as a team and I want to gratefully thank  our Staff - the kaiako  ,and their amazing support workers; in the office – Judy Michelle  and Anne who keep the ship moving

Our talented musos – Tanya and Bryce and technical support Roger,

Val in the Library,  Sheryll  with  all her sports organisation, Brenda for her before school club and Tony our caretaker…

Particular thanks must also go to our Board of Trustees - and to Damian who has agreed to pick up the mantle of Board Chair.

To our hardworking Community support group, runanga matua, our Chaplain John, Big Brothers and Sisters, our Karena and our highly skilled HPP volunteers -   and finally to each of you , for the part you have played in supporting our kura, through words and actions.
Thank you.

Especial thanks to some people that will not be part of our team next year  who are off to other jobs in other schools and workplaces-

I acknowledge Dr Bradley Hannigan who has tendered his resignation from the Board recently. Bradley has given faithful , wise service to this Board of Trustees over more than six years and we have appreciated his knowledge and dedication to our school on behalf of all our tamariki.

To Ashley, Sophie, Donna, and Bernie we thank you for your mahi and the commitment you have given to our tamariki this year and we wish you well in your ongoing careers.

To Ellie our intern from Germany, who is returning home.

To Whaea Shev, who starts her maternity leave today… We can’t wait to see you back with baby!

To Jean who is embarking on a well deserved retirement we wish you every possible happiness.

We will miss you all!

To our Year 6 s.

We are all very proud of your achievements this year . You have been wonderful tuakana -role models - fulfilling a wide range of services within the school.

Continue to act with integrity  and passion- Doing what is right even when no one is looking, and doing it well. You will continue to be great ambassadors for Nelson Central School and your families.

Finally to our  returning tamariki and their whanau ….

We know that you will continue to grow and shine next year, and we look forward to that with great excitement to see what unfolds.

On behalf  of all the team here at Nelson Central School we wish you all a joyous Christmas and a lovely safe  time with your families this Christmas.

Please feel free to use our school playing areas and playgrounds these holidays under your supervision.

Building work  will be  ongoing but  is fenced off and should not affect any other areas of the school. You may see a painter or two doing touch up work as well.

We appreciate the part you each play in keeping our school tidy and safe.
 Thank you.

EOTC Review
As an outcome of our EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom) review this year we have made some changes to camps for our Year 5 and 6 students.

Camps will now be at Mistletoe Bay in the Marlborough Sounds every second year (even years).

The alternate year will involve termly "adventure days," making the most of some of the amazing outdoor opportunities we have around our region.

This should make managing costs more reasonable for families, and an indication of what these activities will be and the associated costs will come out early in Term 1.
2019 Stationery Lists
Your child has now received their 2019 stationery list.  The items can be purchased from Office Max or Warehouse Stationery.  When you are purchasing please advise them that you are from Nelson Central School, as there is a points rewards system and all the points come to our school at the end of each year.
Misplaced/lost stationery lists can be accessed via our website, these are under the new 2019 Classrooms numbers.  Please note these have also been emailed to Office Max, Warehouse Stationery, Whitcoulls and Paper Plus Nelson.
Kowhai News
Over the last  2 weeks our tamariki have been taking part in the Get Firewise programme. In the first week the fire crews came into class to help reinforce the message of "Get Low, Get Down, Get Out, Quick!"
Here we are practicing this in our classrooms.

On our 'Big Day In' this week the Fire crew came back to school again this time with their fire engine.........................

.........and the smoke house. Here we are pretending to be asleep in the house.......

and learning how to get out quick when we hear the smoke alarm go off.

We also cooled off on our Big Day In with sponge and water relays followed by a wet sponge battle!!

A great way to end the term and a very successful year. A big thank you for all the support we have had this year from our Kowhai whanau and we wish you all a very happy Christmas and a good start to 2019.

Pohutukawa News
The classes from Pohutukawa had a great Big Day In to celebrate the amazing year we have had together.  Thank you for a wonderful year of learning and to the supportive whanau we have had in 2018.
Merry Christmas from all the Pohutukawa teachers,
Helen, Lynley, Kate and Kathryn
We used all our Key Competency skills in the Christmas Tree challenge with Helen and Kathryn.
With only 8 sheets of newspaper, one roll of sellotape and a piece of red, green and yellow paper, we worked in a group to create a free standing Christmas Tree.
We were very proud of the results AND how we worked together thinking through the challenge.
Finishing the Big Day In with a swim in the school pool was a perfect way to end our celebration.
Pohutukawa Superstars were celebrated last week at our Syndicate Assembly.  Tino Pai Rawa!
Totara News
What a huge final couple of weeks it has been. Today we celebrated our Year 6 Leavers in their special ceremony. What a great group of tamariki they are to be moving on from NCS and we thank them for their amazing contributions to our kura over their time here.

We had our final Summit walk for the year, up Fringed Hill. The children had to dig deep at times to get up the steep track and they learnt a good lesson about how quickly it can get cold in the hills, but they all made the top in good time and were able to soak in the epic views.

On Monday we enjoyed our Big Day Out with loads of activities and a stunning day.

From ll the Tōtara team we would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season.

Ngā mihi,

John
Ngā Karere o Te Pouahi

On Thursday the 29th of November, Tamariki Toa performed at the Isel Night Market.  It was a beautiful evening with many people in the audience watching us.  The tamariki performed beautifully and with great sound.  We enjoyed having dinner at the market following our performance.  Ka rawe koutou mahi kapa haka ngā tamariki o Tamariki Toa.
On Sunday the 2nd of December, Tamariki Toa opened up the Nelson Santa Parade with a great kapa haka performance.  At first we had to contend with some music playing on the loud speaker, however once that was turned off, we were able to be heard by the massive audience that had arrived for the parade.  Our performance was top notch and our singing had great volume.  The audience clapped loudly after each of our items.  We were lucky to have a lot of our whānau there supporting us also.
On Thursday the 6th of December, Tamariki Toa were apart of a fundraiser concert called 'Kapahaka Under the Stars'  The fundraiser was for all three groups who will be travelling to National Kapahaka competitions next year in November.  We had two shows, one at 3:30pm and one at 6pm.  The tamariki worked hard during both performances.  We would like to thank all people who supported us behind the scenes as well as those who purchased tickets to come along and watch one of the shows.  Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou kātoa!
Last Thursday and Friday, 13th and 14th of December, Te Pouahi had a noho marae at Whakatū Marae. We all arrived by 9am and shortly after, a pōwhiri was held. This was mainly for our new whānau who hadn't been on the marae before.  Following the pōwhiri, we had morning tea.  After morning tea, we had a poroporoake (farewell) for our year 6 leavers.  We have 15 year 6's leaving Te Pouahi this year.  At the poroporoake, a slideshow of photos and an acrostic poem of each year 6 was shared.  All kaiako shared their own kōrero, and whānau shared theirs too.  The rest of the tamariki from Te Pouahi shared their kōrero about who they would miss and why, it was such a special time.  Finally, the year 6's had their turn.  They spoke about what they would miss about being in Te Pouahi and at Nelson Central School.  A lot of tears were shared, but many laughs were had also.  Following our poroporoake, we had lunch before participating in some fun rotations for the rest of the afternoon.  These rotations included using our wheels at the skate park, art in Mauri Ora and Kākāti as well as ball games outside.  At 5pm, we had a rūnanga mātua hui (parent meeting).  Some great kōrero was shared by many of our whānau who were present.  Dinner was absolutely yummy and there was lots of kai to go around.  By 8:30pm, the tamariki were getting ready to settle down to sleep.  Some went a lot easier than others!  Sleeping over at the marae is so much fun!

Friday came, and the first whispers were heard at 5:30am!  These people were encouraged by kaiako to go back to sleep.  Some did and some didn't...it was a long day for these tamariki.  Whilst waiting for breakfast, we did some early morning Jump Jam in the whare.  Following breakfast, we had wā whānau to start our day before organising ourselves to go to Nayland Pool.  We left the marae in pouring rain, however once at Nayland, the rain settled.  It didn't matter too much because we were getting wet anyway!  The rain came down a couple of times, but by the end of the day, the sun had come out and it had turned really hot!  For lunch, we had a BBQ.  Thank you to Whāea Kareen for doing all the cooking and thank you to Broadgreen Intermediate for letting us borrow their BBQ for the afternoon.   At 2:30. we were back on our buses to head back to the marae.  There, our whānau had arrived to pick us up.  Following karakia, we went home.  Another great noho marae had by all!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have assisted me with Sport throughout the year:coaching, managing, transporting and supervising at events. To those families who are ending their time with Nelson Central School,  thank you for your support over the years. I really appreciate it.
