Former Missouri AD Alden never really left the scene, but will now be back in the chair, at least in an interim capacity, as the new Senior Advisor to the President at Cleveland State. Alden will lead the Vikings for CSU Prez Sands, "I am committed to helping advance the cause." Sands on Alden, "Mike Alden has a tremendous history of success at multiple institutions and a national reputation for promoting athletic and academic excellence. We are looking forward to having his advice and counsel on campus as we seek a permanent leader for Vikings athletics." Official start date is February 1st. (link)
Stadium's McMurphy polled the College Football Playoff's current committee on the topic of expansion before 2026, "3 individuals are in favor of expanding to eight teams before 2026, 3 individuals are undecided, 1 individual wants to remain at four teams, 4 individuals abstained from voting." On of the undecided voters, "Sooner or later, this (eight-team playoff) discussion should happen. I’m willing to dig in on the specifics." (link)
Alston: OSKR's Schwarz with a running blog from the courtroom on Tuesday that's pretty fascinating to read with a bunch of legal shorthand & his own real-time thoughts. Notable: "Berman says their ‘million dollar fearmongering’ isn’t true:  You have all these lay people saying what will happen .. Wisconsin chancellor said UW would quit. But UW clarified, they’ll sit down with the rest of the Big Ten and make new rules that won’t harm demand. […] Kessler says we are not claiming the NCAA should be punished for giving more. Rather we are showing that each crossing of COA has caused no harm to demand and thus conference decisions will be fine. 'Not a quantum leap but a little tiny baby step.' […] Wilkinson says schools will pay high amounts if allowed. (Post-hearing note: this was weird, she basically said we all know that everyone is going to pay like crazy if allowed even though all of her witnesses said they would not.  Was she undermining her own witnesses credibility.  My mouth may have be agape during this part of her argument). […] Wilkinson argues a non-P5 conference will try offer very high pay to compete with the P5. Judge W says but plaintiffs argue that they will take demand into account. Note: At this point I wanted to jump out of my seat and yell “If that’s true, that’s exactly what the antitrust laws encourage – giving the non-P5 the ability to out-compete and join the P5 by dint of getting better talent.  But I did not.” Lots more. (link); Here's Courthouse News Service's review. A key question from Judge Wilken: "It seems one should balance the anti-competitive conduct against the pro-competitive justification just to see if it’s meaningful. In other words, if you had an egregious anti-competitive violation against a tiny pro-competitive justification, does this pro-competitive justification justify the violation?" (link)
North Carolina with a year's worth of announcements in a single day. Here's the new deal with Learfield, which looks to have officially started last July & includes $144.75M in guaranteed cash over 12 years. $9.75M last fiscal, $10K this year, $14.5M in 28-29. Signing bonus of $3M paid 50/50 on/before December 31 of last year, on/before June 30 of this year. $4M in capital cash, too. List of bonus monies topped by MBB National Championship at $100K. Competitive review once after July 1 of 2025. More. (link); And, a new pact with Nike, highlighted by a starting point of $5.1M in annual swag. Base comp of $3.25M. 10-year deal. (link, link); Oh, and how about 11 new HC contracts, led by the potential of MBB HC Williams sticking around in Chapel Hill for another eight years. Williams is due $3.9M this season. (linklinklink)
NSD: USA Today's Wolken argues it's pretty easy for the big brands in college FB to stay on top with a scholarships limit at 85. Suggests rolling it back to 70, not allowing more than 20 signees per class, removing redshirts & giving five years of eligibility, redistribute 10 schollies to other sports (thinks Baseball & Soccer need the most help), all in an effort to achieve more parity. In closing, "Maybe college football and the NCAA doesn’t really care that the ability to win championships is being concentrated in the hands of a precious few. But there is a more interesting way to do this, if anyone has the guts to actually pursue it." (link); FootballScoop compiles some of the best Signing Day graphics executed around the nation. (link); Temple went with caricatures. Pretty cool. (link); Ohio State went with a video game that no longer exists, but still has a cult following. (link); Your annual read on why recruiting ranks do actually matter, especially at the top of the sport. (link)
Utah Senator Hatch pushing forward on a federal bill (Sports Wagering Market Integrity Act of 2018) to oversee sports gambling, which would include the use of "official league data to grade wagers until at least 2023 and create a mechanism for authorities to target unlicensed operators domestically and offshore." In turn, no integrity fee for leagues. There would also be a National Sports Wagering Clearinghouse that would act as an integrity unit. (link, link); The American Gaming Association calls Hatch's proposal a "problem looking for a solution," runs down how most of the angles are already being implemented at the state level. Our latest bit of verbal back & forth comes from Kentucky & Virginia Tech MBB camps over a planned tip for this season. Hokies HC Williams says his Hokies were supposed to play the Wildcats in MSG earlier this month, but then the contract got cancelled "without us knowing." UK Deputy AD Peevy's take, "We never got to a point of a contract. Definitely a verbal agreement, headed to produce a contract. […] We elected to get out of the game and book Seton Hall because it hadn’t gotten finalized [with Tech], there was an opportunity to play a different opponent." Peevy also mentions attendance angles from the MSG folks & the Cats staff not wanting to play too many ACC foes this season. (link)
HC Moves: Chattanooga AD Wharton goes with former Mocs staffer and alum Wright as the next FB HC. Wright spent the past two seasons as an AC at Georgia State. (link); New Mexico Volleyball HC Nelson will not have his contract renewed. AC Manser steps in as interim. (link); Cal AD Knowlton selects former Bears AC Crosson to lead the Volleyball team in Berkeley. Crosson spent the past seven years as HC at Cal Poly. (link); New Mexico State AHC Wallis heads to El Paso to take over the UTEP Volleyball program. (link); Bowl bonus data is starting to hit the wire, as Ohio FB HC Solich gets $51,533 for the Bobcats' win in the Frisco Bowl. That figure is 10% of his salary and brings his bonuses to $61K this year. (link); New Sacramento State FB HC Taylor says his 7-8 year contract is fully guaranteed. (link); Akron FB HC Arth's new deal is $500K guaranteed that includes $425K in salary, $50K for media work and $25K from apparel deal. Can earn an additional $225K in incentives, including a $100K bonus for a major bowl appearance. MAC title worth $50K, MAC East title $25K, bowl game appearance $15K, MAC COY $15K and two academic performance incentives at $10K each. (link); Oregon decides not to appeal the NCAA's two-game suspension for WBB HC Graves, but will appeal the vacating of track and field records. Graves will sit out the Ducks' next two games against Air Force and UC Irvine this week. (link)
Lots of shifts at ESPN's production group as notable leader Druley moves up to EVP of Event & Studio Production & will report to EVP of Content Schell. Important for the collegiate space is VP of Production Fitting will now oversee all FB programming, both college & pro. Same with VP of Production Shiffman on the hoops side. Per SBD's Ourand, "The point of these moves is to have execs oversee all aspects of a sport, from live events to studio programming across linear TV and digital." More. (link)
San Diego State says it properly handled reports of Aztecs MBB student-athlete McDaniels' video recordings of sexual acts while in high school that the university first found out about in September of 2016. SDSU Senior Assoc. AD for Communications & Media Relations May: "There’s one thing you can say for certain. Jalen has been treated like any other student on this campus would be in this situation. […] University Police followed common practice by contacting the organization the individual is affiliated with – the athletics department – to locate (McDaniels). We are confident that the efforts of University Police and SDSU Athletics were fully consistent with the existing practice for aiding sister law enforcement agencies, and mindful of the student’s right to due process." The attorney for one of the defendants claims the university's moves "negatively impaired" the investigation. (link)
Pro-to-College: Good read from The Athletic on why so many NBA players answer questions with generic cliches & the overall challenge of being genuine. Current Portland Trail Blazer & former Ohio State student-athlete Turner: "If an interviewer doesn’t like me, then he can make me seem like an asshole. I’d much rather be represented as a happy, nice guy." Add this to your queue of articles to show student-athletes, especially hoopers. (link); The NFL is going all-in on analytics. How will it trickle down to the college game? Atlanta Falcons GM Dimitroff: "It’s about translating that data ASAP and being very, very in tune with the numbers. You can’t be a year behind, you can’t be a month behind." Lots here. (link)
"Me and coach Malzahn have had this conversation. I told him I want to be engaged but not involved. My responsibility is and will be to make sure I'm helping put our coaches in the best possible position." That is, of course, Auburn AD Greene during the Tigers' National Signing Day festivities yesterday. More: "Coach and I have talked about his character traits and he knows he's an offensive mind. He knows he likes to be in the weeds of things, which is fine. So my job will be to help make sure he's got a team built around him in terms of a staff who he can rely on to continue to help develop — not only our program, but our players and make sure our players are first and foremost in our mind." (link)
Wisconsin-Milwaukee AD Braun ups her department's deal with Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin to become the largest in Panthers history, a mark previously held by a seven-year, "just under" $600K pact. This one is of the five-year variety & includes "exclusivity for orthopedic care, physical therapy and health care coverage for UW-Milwaukee student-athletes as well as continued sponsorship rights and other benefits." OHOW gets the "corporate champion" label. (link)
All signs point to transferring Georgia QB Fields employing notable attorney Mars in his efforts to gain immediate eligibility. Sounds like Miami (FL) QB Williams, who played in one game this year, will also hire Mars. (link, link); More out of Athens as former Bulldogs T&F student-athlete Davis takes to Twitter in her effort to get UGA to release her for immediate competition elsewhere. Directly calls out the school and HC Kyprianou. (link)
TV/OTT: Fox Sports boss Shanks points to the importance of NFL rights for the New Fox spin off, "If we sat here today and had just done a 20-year NFL renewal -- and you asked me what’s on the top of my mind -- it would be renewing the NFL in 21 years." And, like a true negotiator, Shanks says of the increase in rights fees, "Not every sport is created equal." (link); BTIG's Greenberg with a deep piece on how the NFL's upcoming rights negotiations may play out, a key storyline is how collegiate conference rights could be impacted. "CBS is in the weakest position." Lots more. (link); Maybe it's just a ploy or maybe this could be the snowball that begins to roll, but CBS says it's considering not renewing it's $100M annual deal with Nielsen. (link); Early bowl TV ratings were down year-over-year. (link)
Also Noticed: Congratulations to Washington State, which recently received the Washington State Psychological Associations' 2018 Public Citizen Award for the athletic department's commitment to mental health awareness to WSU student-athletes. (link); The Clemson digital team just can't quit... check out how the Grinch almost stole signing day. (link); CMA Entertainer of the Year and four-time Grammy winner Keith Urban will headline this year's CFP Allstate championship tailgate. Andy Grammer will sing the national anthem (link)
