Happy New Year from the team at ECSA HQ
Dear ECSA Community,

We hope that you had a wonderful holiday with loved ones. The team at HQ celebrated a year marked by growth and learning, and took advantage of the charming Christmas Markets of Berlin to enjoy each other's company outside the office.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a great start to the new year, and invite you to note a number of important events in 2019.

The CSA Conference - March 13-17

The upcoming CitSci2019 Conference will take place on March 13-17 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and is organised by the Citizen Science Association. The conference will feature five days of workshops, field trips, symposia, and talks where you can network with some of the most important voices in the citizen science community. 

There will be three special tracks at this year’s conference:
  1. Environmental Justice and Citizen Science
  2. Problem-Driven Citizen Science
  3. Citizen Science and Education
There is also still time to submit a late-breaking poster to share your own work.

Register by January 31 to take advantage of early bird pricing. We are happy to provide all current ECSA members with an affiliate discount of 20% to CSA membership that lead to discounted Conference fees.
The ECSA 2019 GA - April 2

Members of ECSA are invited to the ECSA General Assembly (GA) on April 2 in Brussels, which will take place from 16:30 - 18:30.  Before this on the same day, you can take part in the BiodivERsaA Citizen Science workshop or the ECSA Working Group meetings;  and the day after you can take part in the DITOs final event .

Please register your interest in attending the General Assembly, the Working Group Meetings, and/or the DITOs final event.
The DITOs Final Event  - April 3

The DITOs project will come to an end in May 2019, partners of the consortium wish to showcase results and highlights of the project and put them in the context of wider policy objectives, including plans for Horizon Europe, offering the exciting opportunity for the thorough exchange of experience and lesson learnt. 

The final event on April 3 will be a mix of talks, panels with local and EU policymakers, networking sessions, a marketplace showcasing DITOs activities, ECSA Working Groups, and new projects.

The Student Citizen Science Online Challenge is Extended

Great news! The deadline of the Student Citizen Science Online Challenge has been extended to January 31st, 2019 to allow more time for groups to enter and for them to prepare their multimedia stories. We want to make sure everyone has a chance to participate!
 
Teacher Training Workshop - Call for proposal to ECSA members

Within the framework of the Horizon 2020 Doing It Together Science (DITOs) project, we invite ECSA members to submit proposals for organising a workshop to train teachers in techniques of environmental and biodiversity monitoring.The workshop should be planned and implemented by an ECSA member.

Proposals may request a budget up to and including 1.500€ for the organisation of 1 or more workshops to be held until the end of April 2019. Submission guidelines and deadline can be found here.
National Meeting 'Towards a Shared Strategy for CS' - February 1-2

This roundtable, to be held in Rome, Italy, is promoted by the National Academy of Sciences and the Museum of Natural History of the Maremma in collaboration with the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) and Doing It Together Science (DITOs) project. Check the agenda here. Please note that the event will be held in Italian.
We are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Professor Emilia Chiancone (6th from right, standing), who has been an important ambassador for citizen science in Italy in organising the very First Italian Citizen Science Conference in November 2017 and closely collaborating with us for developing a national strategy for implementing citizen science in Italy. Our thoughts and condolences go to her family and colleagues.
Call For Papers
The Call for Papers for LIBER’s 2019 Annual Conference is now open.

The theme is Research Libraries for Society and we are looking for papers and posters on a range of topics including: Citizen science and public engagement Copyright and legal matters Information ethics Open Science, including Open Access Linked open data and semantic interoperability Digital humanities and digital cultural heritage The future of collections Bibliometrics Emerging initiatives The deadline to submit a proposal is 14 January 2019. Call for Manuscripts for the special issue on “Citizen Science and the Role in Sustainable Development” in the journal “Sustainability”.

This Special Issue aims to discuss the role citizen science (CS) can play in monitoring and implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The deadline to submit a manuscript is 30 July 2020. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website.
Call for Papers from the Czech Academy of Science, Institute of Geonics for the Special Issue of ISI/WOS.

The indexed peer-reviewed journal Moravian Geographical Reports in 2019: Citizen science in geographical research: Trends, methods, and innovative technologies Moravian Geographical Reports is a fully open-access journal publishing articles in the “platinum” open-access mode (no fees for readers and no article processing charges or publication fees for authors). All manuscripts will be reviewed as a cohort for this Special Issue. Manuscripts must be submitted no later than 15 March 2019 to: mgr@geonika.cz
