FROM CLEVELAND AGO DEAN TIMOTHY ROBSON

Timothy RobsonDear AGO Colleagues,

This is a slow news week in the lead up to Christmas, so I’m labeling this the “Special Christmas Music” issue, with an extended playlist of music that you might have overlooked on YouTube. I curated this playlist especially for listening by members and subscribers of the Cleveland Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. There are both organ selections, as well as anthems and carols. Short works are at the beginning of the playlist, and longer works (cantatas, oratorios, organ collections, lessons and carols services) are at the end. Feel free to mix and match; I hope there is something that will interest and intrigue everyone.

You can find the list at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlcqRZryBGj3c-k40GehPQnw5Q2jmIeMv. You can also search YouTube for AGO Cleveland Christmas 2018. It’s a public playlist, so anyone can get to it.

Of course, the granddaddy of all Christmas Eve services is the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge. This is not only the centennial of the service, but also the final Lessons and Carols service led by Stephen Cleobury before his retirement after 30-some years at King’s. The service is broadcast live on many NPR stations on Monday, December 24, 10:00am EST. You can also stream it live at that same time from BBC Radio 4 (https://bbc.co.uk/radio4). The service is also repeated complete (including the organ postlude that is always cut from the live broadcast) on Christmas Day on BBC Radio 3 (https://bbc.co.uk/radio3). Check the Radio 3 website for details.

This issue also has one significant news item: the Save the Date announcement for the first of our January “house meetings” to have informal discussions about matters of concern to chapter members regarding the AGO, your professional lives and responsibilities, and who knows what else. One date is set; the second will be announced very soon.

I wish you a very Merry Christmas, with thanks for all you do to support church music, especially at this busy time.

Yours faithfully,

Tim Robson

January House Meetings: SAVE THE DATE

Our January chapter meetings will be on two dates, hosted by members of our Executive Committee. They will be small group meetings with opportunities to share wisdom, talk about how the AGO can help you, and network with colleagues about issues of professional interest. There will be a couple of conversation starter questions, but the agenda will be guided by the attendees’ interests.

The first meeting will be Sunday, January 13, in the late afternoon (exact time TBD) at the Rocky River home of Don Jackson

The second meeting (exact date TBD) hosted by Don Verkuilen at his home in Tremont.

Complete details will be forthcoming as soon as they are known.

SPECIAL CHRISTMAS PLAYLIST
