Community Connections at Christmas

Christmas can be a lonely time for some people so it's great to hear about some of the Local Area Coordination connections being made at this time of year:

  • Over in York Mrs B had a list of people she wanted to get Christmas cards out to but was struggling to write them on her own. The Local Area Coordinator connected Mrs B with the GoodGym who gave her a hand with the list. Without their help Mrs B said it would have taken her all day but instead she had time left to go out to a Christmas lunch. Read the full story
  • In Swansea the Local Area Coordinators have been busy connecting people with the Poppy Lounge, a local pop-up community cafe. The cafe is voluntarily run by a local couple who put on a lovely Christmas dinner. The majority of the group were originally introduced by their Local Area Coordinator and are now like a family, all looking out for each other.

People doing it for themselves

With support from the Big Lottery Fund, Community Catalysts has developed a new project to better understand the conditions that enable people to believe in themselves and use their gifts. The project is called ‘people doing it for themselves’ and has a focus on older and disabled people. You can read more about the project here.

The project is split into two phases. For phase one we want to:
  • Engage a partner or partners who will help design an approach to gathering evidence of need for the project. More information
  • Identify and engage people who are doing it for themselves. More information and in easyread and the organisations that help them
  • Engage with public sector commissioners’ keen to develop a different strategy that commissions for people’s strengths. More information
  • Produce a report which details the issues
  • Bring together people into a co-production group
  • Agree project aim, approach and outcomes for the second phase.

Giving people lifts...

Peter Bates from the National Development Team for Inclusion is working on a paper around giving people lifts and as part of this is collecting examples of where people have been successfully giving lifts in a ‘citizen sensible’ way, rather than with a requirement of formal DBSs. Peter’s document is a developing work in progress. You can read the draft here.

If you have any examples or information to share around giving lifts you can feed back directly to Sam Clark at Learning Disability England (Samantha.Clark@LDEngland.org.uk) who is collating the responses. As mentioned, the document is a work in progress but Sam has asked for any responses to be sent to her by early January.
