HELP THE CAUSE

There have been many turning points in the nearly six year long struggle to protect the Buffalo River. In each case, your participation has been crucial.  We have now reached what may be one of the most important crossroads.  The Regular Session of the 92nd Arkansas General Assembly will convene on Monday, January 14, 2019.  We will  need your voice. Click the Rapid Response Network button to learn more and to commit to speaking up for the Buffalo in a truly meaningful way.

Pretzel Logic, designed to delay

C&H and their Farm Bureau lawyers now have three active cases in circuit court, two in Newton County and one in Pulaski County. The legal reasoning behind these cases is as twisted as a pretzel and incomprehensible to the lay person not paying close attention*. We believe that this contorted language is a purposeful ploy to slow the process and delay the closure of C&H until the legislature can come to the rescue. We already hear rumblings of special "stealth” bills” with vague language intended to weaken regulations and provide a shield for C&H.  Such bills could be introduced in unexpected committees or in the rush at the end of the session.

If you wish to delve into the esoterica of these cases, read all the circuit court filings here  and here  and here .

Help us get ready

We have joined hands with several of our allied organizations and have taken steps to thwart closed door efforts to threaten the Buffalo by way of special legislation. The most effective way to preempt such bills is for you, as a constituent, to let your representatives know you care and that you are watching.

What you can do today
The 2019 regular session begins in midJanuary. If you've never contacted your state representative and state senator (or even if you have!), take a moment to do so. You don't have to have anything particular to say. Just introduce yourself as their constituent, let them know what issues are important to you, and let them know you'll be paying close attention during the session. Establishing contact now (especially if done cordially) can help increase the chances that they'll be more responsive to you later should you need to get their attention during session. You can find contact for all current lawmakers at www.arkleg.state.ar.us. (Incoming lawmakers are listed, but contact information isn't yet available in all cases. Bookmark the site and check back.)

And how you can help during the legislative session
You can also help us respond rapidly when threatening bills arise. You can use this form to sign up, identify your legislative district, and we will alert you when we hear of legislation which threatens the Buffalo.  We will then provide background information on the bill and ask that you visit, call, or write your representative and ask for their support FOR the Buffalo.  Will You Help? Sign Up Now.  Note: This is a limited time commitment on your part and is separate from your free subscription to this newsletter.
During this time of giving we want to thank you for all the support you have given toward the cause of SAVING THE BUFFALO RIVER- AGAIN.

Happy Holidays

We've said this many times in the past, but as a reminder, what we advocate for is the complete shutdown of the C&H facility, fair compensation to the local owners, and the establishment of a permanent moratorium on future hog CAFOs in the Buffalo River Watershed.
