The big snow damages Sarge's outdoor canopies
Those living in Western North Carolina know that the area got walloped by a big snowstorm Dec. 8 – 10. Sarge’s Adoption Center outdoor area suffered from the heavy snow.
“There was major storm damage to the canopies in our outdoor areas,” said Penny Wallace, Sarge’s Administrator. “The canopies collapsed and need to be replaced with more durable metal roofing. But, the costs are significant and Sarge’s is asking for donations to help cover the costs.”
Thankfully, all the animals were safely stowed inside Sarge’s Adoption Center during the storm and its aftermath.
Sarge’s is grateful to WLOS-TV for coming to Sarge’s after the storm and helping spread the word about the damage.
Here’s a link to a video made by Sarge’s Kennel Manager, Nikola Rubley, showing the damage, as well as a link to the WLOS-TV online story. Thanks to Brent Earnest for the photo capturing the snowstorm damage.

Soldiers love Sarge's
This fall, Sarge’s intern, Jess, sent a box of Sarge’s Dog Walk T-shirts to her husband, Jonathan, and his unit in Iraq. On Veteran’s Day, Sarge’s shared this photo of soldiers from Kings Mountain NC 878th Engineer Company and soldiers from 665th engineer company, out of Pennsylvania.
Thank you for your service, and, by the way, Sarge’s staff adds that they’ve never had such handsome models for Sarge’s shirts.
FFBB auction winner has a great time with prize
Sarge’s supporter Tracey Madgeburg helped Sarge’s by bidding on, and winning, the Furry Friends Benefit Bash auction studio visit with 99.9 KISS Country morning personalities Eddie Foxx and Sharon Green.
Many know Eddie and Sharon for their years of support for Sarge’s Dog Walk. They happily serve as contest judges and leaders of the annual Dog Walk.
Tracey and her guest spent a morning with Eddie and Sharon at the iHeartMedia studios in Asheville.
“I had a blast,” Tracey said. “They are so generous with their support. Sarge’s and all the fur babies thank Eddie and Sharon.”
“Outstanding — you did a good thing,” Eddie said to Tracey about bidding on the Sarge’s auction. “Love them fur babies,” he added.
A big ‘thank you’ goes to Eddie and Sharon!
Save the Date for Karaoke fun
Karaoke for the animals returns Saturday, Jan. 26, from 6 – 10 p.m. at Boojum Brewing in Waynesville. The event will be Sarge’s third super-fun Karaoke Night at The Gem Bar, downstairs at Boojum Brewing Tap Room. DJ Razor, a crowd favorite, will be back.
Funds raised go to Sarge’s WuzBug Fund for Special Needs, which allows Sarge’s to help animals with injuries, disorders and diseases requiring medical treatment outside of the routine.
Tickets will be available starting Jan. 14, and are $20 per person in advance; $25 at the door.
Stay tuned for more details by following Sarge’s on Face Book.
Mark your calendars for Sarge's January classes
Sarge’s staff holds regular classes on animal behavior, with Sarge’s Animal Behavior Coordinator, Caitlin Morrow.
New to the schedule are animal enrichment classes, with Sarge’s Volunteer Coordinator, Windy McKinney.
“A dog walk is just one way in which to enrich your dog’s life,” Windy said. “For shelter dogs, enrichment is crucial to their survival inside of their kennels. Learn why dogs need enrichment, and various ways in which to help them stay mentally stimulated when they can’t get outside.”
Other activities include Dog Play Group training with volunteers, dog walking Lake Junaluska Tuesday nights, and adoption events at the Haywood County Fairground flea market (next is Jan. 12) and at BearWaters Brewing.
How about trying yoga sessions to benefit Sarge’s animals? The next yoga class to benefit Sarge’s is Dec. 29 at Waynesville Yoga Center, and Jan. 5 — with cats — at HCAS.

Infirmary News
Sarge’s wants supporters to know about Brownie, a dog who had the misfortune of being hit by a car.
“A good Samaritan witnessed the accident, and took Brownie to Haywood Animal Emergency,” said Nancy Bulluck, Sarge’s medical assistant, social media manager and Sarge’s founder. “This good Samaritan also paid for Brownie to be treated right away. Then this kind, generous soul gave Sarge's a wonderful donation, which more than covered the cost of the surgery Brownie needed to repair his hip joint.”
Brownie is recovering in a foster home and his foster mom says he is great with other dogs, great with kids, house trained and crate trained, and loves to snuggle.
While Brownie’s medical treatment was covered, there are other animals with special needs, who need your help. Sarge’s is grateful to all who donate to the WuzBug Fund for Special Needs for treatment for these dogs and cats.
Please be an angel and donate to the fund, so that Sarge’s can take care of the next special-needs animal that comes along.

Recipe of the Month

In an effort to help the dogs in our care deal with long periods of time in a kennel, we are going to feature a pupsicle Recipe of the Week. Our recipes of the week can be used to fill a Kong or even turned into a frozen Pupsicle treat. To create a frozen Pupsicle you will use these ingredients plus a plastic container or almost any size, add ingredients, add water, freeze the whole thing. The smallest container we use is a large red solo cup size. If you need additional food to fill the Kong or Pupsicle use the dog’s regular food and this treat can partially or fully replace a meal depending on quantity of food used.

An Elvis Presley Holidays
1.Peanut Butter (can use up to ¼ cup)*
2.Sliced banana(s)
3.Bacon flavored treats, bacon crumbles (can use up to 1 teaspoon)**
4.Greek Yogurt (can use up to ½ cup) *

*Make sure none of the ingredients have xylitol in it. Some of the peanut butters and yogurts are now being made with xylitol which is a sugar substitute but is highly toxic to dogs.
** Try to minimize grease if you are cooking homemade bacon by blotting it before using it. Bacon can be rough on stomachs so a tiny amount goes a long way. You can omit bacon all together as well.

Product needs
The staff is asking for more cat scratchers to enrich Sarge’s cats’ environments. Sarge’s gives each cat their own scratcher.
“For dogs, we really need Nylabones and Kongs, because when the weather is bad, and they have to stay indoors, they are just like little kids who need to stay occupied some way,” Nancy said.
Both items are on Sarge’s Amazon wish list, or may be purchased locally and brought to the Adoption Center.
Visit the wish list at www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/?ie=UTF8&cid=AJUNDSQKA2525. Sarge’s animals and staff say, “Thank you!”
