Woodstock Jewish Congregation

Family School

December 13, 2018

Dear  Families,

Thank you to all who attended First Friday, Tot Shabbat and the Congregational Chanukah Party!
It certainly sounded like our students had a wonderful Chanukah.  Everyone shared their Chanukah happenings and we talked about the wonder of miracles.
In tefilah, we read traditional Saturday morning prayers in Hebrew and English and discussed what the meaning was behind them.  The Shema and the V'Ahavta are where we started.  The children also learned about tefillin, when and why a person might choose to wear them. We had some out for them to see and handle.
In Judaics, we wrote letters or made pictures for our pen pals in Uganda. Each student enthusiastically introduced themselves and wrote or colored beautifully. We will wait patiently for responses!  We read a book called Never Say A Mean Word Again and made labels for the Tzedakah boxes that went home last week.
We have one more week before Winter Break. There is class on December 18th.  Then we do not return until January 8th.  Please make sure your child studies over the break.  Studying/reviewing just 5 minutes per day which is the minimum asked and is a huge help in learning a new language.  Your support is greatly appreciated!

For snack we provide healthy choices of mini bagels, cream cheese, peanut butter and jelly. GF tortilla chips, veggies with dip, hummus and clementines or some other fruit and of course water. We appreciate donations towards snack as long as it is not junk food.  Yogurt, crackers, popcorn and any of the above can be dropped off on any day  and saved for the next week.

Just a few reminders:

  • If you have any concerns regarding our security practices please feel free to contact me. We do have our doors locked at all times.  All teachers and myself carry our cell phones at all times and we have an alarm system
  • Students are more than welcome to bring a water bottle to Family School.
  • Snow Days, if Saugerties School District is closed or if they cancel after school activities we are closed.  I will also send an email to confirm.
  • Please scroll down for the calendar.
  • If your child has a cell phone please tell them to turn it off during Family School.  If they have a problem they should speak with their teacher or me before they call home.
As I always say: We are committed to creating a warm, respectful and safe environment in which we can learn and grow together as a community.  The Family School is a place that gives life to the many values that we learn from the teachings of the Torah: kavod (respect), rachamim (compassion), and chesed (kindness).  We look forward to providing a loving, welcoming, enthusiastic environment in which Jewish children and their families from all backgrounds learn to practice Judaism in a meaningful and enlivening way, sparking curiosity and a love for learning.
