Heading into winter break, I want to wish you all a happy holiday and a healthy new year!
I hope you are able to spend time with family, friends, and loved ones during this time of year. I’m particularly excited because my brother and his husband will be coming into town and will be welcoming their first child. I can’t wait to be an uncle and to spoil that kid as much as I can.
It has been a busy time in the BD4 office. We have held over 60 town hall meetings with parents and school communities this semester, funded almost $100 million in projects to go directly to your schools, and recently passed resolutions to generate revenue for our schools, increase supports for students experiencing homelessness, and hold voter registration drives at every high school—leading to record student turnout in November.
I understand that many of you may have questions about a potential teacher strike when school starts again in January. Over these next few weeks, I will be continuing to figure out how we can best serve our students and support our teachers, and want to assure you that we are working hard to avert a strike.
Our teachers deserve more than just our gratitude at this time of year and more than the 6% raise that we are barely able to afford. I look forward to working with them, and you, in the coming months to turn our eyes to Sacramento and demand more funding for our schools. Be sure to check out my op-ed in the LA Times for more on this!
Wishing you a great break, lovely holiday, and a happy, healthy new year!
