College of Engineering removes Calculus 30 as a prerequisite for admission

Effective for 2019-2020 admissions, the College of Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) no longer requires Grade 12 (senior-level) calculus for entry into its Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.E.) degree programs.

Applications for 2019-2020 are open now. The application deadline for the 2019 Fall Term (September) is May 1.

New students are encouraged to apply by February 15 to be eligible for consideration for scholarships and bursaries

Why the change?

USask's College of Engineering was one of only a few schools in Western Canada still requiring Calculus 30 as a prerequisite for admission. Removing this requirement does not diminish the quality of applicants the College of Engineering intends to attract. Instead, this change has been made to reduce some of the systemic barriers to access for engineering programs that are currently in place – namely, the lack of availability of Calculus 30 in rural and remote schools in this case.

Students interested in studying engineering are still expected to have a strong background in mathematics and sciences in order to be successful. Students will continue to complete a high-quality, fully accredited undergraduate program if they study in USask's College of Engineering.
What does this mean for applicants?

This change will not affect applicants who have already been admitted to the College of Engineering for 2019-2020. Admission averages for entering students are calculated following a five-subject formula using Grade 12 (senior-level) subjects that work to each applicant's advantage.

Applicants who are currently enrolled in calculus are encouraged to complete it, as the content in high school-level calculus covers a portion of what will be learned in university. Being able to grasp concepts in high school-level calculus shows that students will be more comfortable with university-level subject matter.

Potential applicants who have not completed calculus and would not have the opportunity to complete it in high school are encouraged to apply now, and provided the other requirements to enter the college are met, can be considered for admission. Access programs and other options are in place if prospective students do not yet meet other requirements.
