A Few Items of Interest...

• First Draft of Capital Improvement Plan: On December 11, Public Works Director David Brown presented an initial review of Capital Improvements to be considered over the next five fiscal years. Items will be reviewed and fine-tuned throughout the budget process. Of special note in the current CIP iteration is a traffic study of Lakeview/Greggs Parkway, a bike/walking path along Butterfield Road to Greggs Parkway, the continued use of Reclaimite rejuvenating spray to extend the life of our roadways, and a series of wish list items for the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. • Hawthorn Mall Plans: On November 27, the Board held a special Committee of the Whole Meeting to hear the initial concepts Hawthorn Mall owner Centennial Real Estate has for the property. Initial plans feature three new stand-alone restaurants along Milwaukee Avenue, including appropriate improvements to Ring Road and the Milwaukee Avenue intersection to support these new businesses. Trustees were favorable to this idea, though they cautioned Centennial to come up with new types of restaurants in order to compete with restaurants already open in town. The next step would be for Centennial to present more specific plans for these three buildings for technical review by Planning & Zoning and by staff. Mall owners informally discussed preliminary ideas for using some of the empty spaces in and around the existing building, including creating multi-family or senior housing, hotel space, or other uses not traditionally associated with Hawthorn Mall. Any development concepts beyond the three new restaurant spaces will be brought back to the board at a later date. (Special Meeting of the Committee of the Whole 11-27-2018)
• New Buildings Near Macy's: Hawthorn Mall owners noted that representatives from Macy's are expected to present preliminary ideas for new stand-alone buildings on their outlots adjacent to Townline Road. That concept presentation will take place at a future meeting.
• Bicentennial Flag: Pete Manhard, President of the Lake County Transportation Alliance, presented the Village with an Illinois Bicentennial Flag celebrating the 200th anniversary of Illinois becoming a state. (Village Board 12-11-2018)
• Donation Box Ordinance: Trustees approved a new ordinance that requires charitable organizations and property owners to jointly register all out door, stand-alone collection bins. The ordinance requires that boxes clearly identify the charity they serve, including contact information. The ordinance also lays out maximum size, placement and expectation for appearance and upkeep. Property owners will be contacted by Village staff over the next several weeks with more information. Staff also realizes that in some cases, property owners have no knowledge of donation box owners, as the boxes simply appear. It is hoped that this registration requirement will support both property owners and legitimate charities. (Village Board 12-11-18)
• Seasonal On-Call Opportunities: The Public Works Department is hiring seasonal employees to work as needed for snow and ice control operations. To learn more about the on-call position, check the On-Call Season Maintenance Worker job posting.
• Seavey Ditch Work: The Vernon Hills Park District reports that contractors will be cleaning out the Seavey Ditch to allow for better stormwater flow through the Village. Work began on December 10. (Debris Cleaning article)
• Branch/Yard Waste Collection: Vernon Hills Public Works crews worked to support residents with a special branch pick up during the week of December 3. Thank you to crews for chipping many of the branches that came down in the recent winter storm. Advanced Disposal also worked to offer support by extending yard waste collection until December 11. Finally, thank you to Public Works for keeping Village streets clear and snow-free during our big November storm.

April 2, 2019 Consolidated Election:
File Packets by December 17

Residents interested in running for local boards – including those serving municipalities, schools, libraries and other organizations – should be preparing their petition packets now in order to be included on the April 2 Consolidated Election ballot. Petition packets may be obtained from each organization that has openings appearing on the April 2 ballot. Petitions were open for circulation for signatures beginning September 17. The first day to file completed nomination packets was December 10, and all packets must be filed by 5 p.m. on December 17 at the appropriate governing bodies. Check the Lake County Consolidated Election Calendar for the full timeline, and the Election Calendar webpage for a concise outline of when elections are held. More information about becoming a candidate is also available by contacting each organization as well as by checking the resource list on the Lake County Clerk's Candidate Services webpage.
