Newsletter #279: Introduction

Happy Friday, friends.

First off, a HUGE hello to the hundreds [literally] of new subs that have signed up over the past fortnight. Thanks for adding this newsletter to your inbox, I do hope it doesn't disappoint.

Second, dearest regular readers, your eyes do not deceive you. The last edition you got was #277 but so was the edition before that (oops). So we're jumping straight to #279. Plan? Plan.

Third, you are correct, there was no edition last week. After the big bombshell news that I dropped in the last FToF (combined with both a genuine need to take some out AND a few family birthdays that needed my attention), I felt like I needed a week off.

Fourth, this edition, #279, is the last FToF of 2018. I had always scheduled this edition to be my last of the year and so I will be freeing up your inbox of FToF-ness until probably the second week of January (shooting for the 11th, we'll see).

Fifth, and finally, YOU ARE ALL SO BLOODY LOVELY.

If you missed the last edition (read it here) you'll know that I left my job at the big O at the end of November and the words, email replies, DMs, coffees, calls, WhatsApps, etc - have all been so humbling and just so bloody lovely.

Thank you. You know who you are.

Right.
Enough of the love in.
Onwards to THE LAST THINGS OF 2018!

1. SPOTIFY: 2018 WRAPPED

I'm a little behind on this but I DON'T CARE BECAUSE MY MUSIC IS THE BEST AND YOURS ISN'T 😘

In SHOCKING news:

And then, related, CAN YOU SPOT THE DAD?

Also: ❤️ you Scott.

If you've not done yours yet, you can RIGHT HERE

If you think you'll like kind of music (small sea creatures excluded) then here is my Spotify Wrapped 2018 playlist. From one Indietronica fan to another xx.

Next on my list is to work through the AMAZING Tastebreakser playlist it made for me too... (I'll share that another time).

Tell me about yours!

PS. For the gamers (read: PS4 owners among you), Sony just did something similar to celebrate the five years of PS4 being alive in the world (mine is here). Go get your own.

2. CLOCK OUT

This is an important read.

Charlotte Schreurs, writing in Campaign, talks to the mental health implications of working SILLY HOURS in the world of advertising and communications. Writing from an extremely personal place of both experience and vulnerability, Charlotte sheds light on an oft-ignored mental illness and the impact that suddenly being thrown on a pitch can have on it.

And this is just one viewpoint.

I know I've touched upon the madness of the hours we do. Be that writing about burnout or other people not really acknowledging just how little there is of them left until it's too late... This is another, fantastic viewpoint on the same subject and is this week's wholly recommended read.

Please, read it.
3. CORDIALLY INVITED

Speaking of great reads, I don't think Zoe Sugg's latest book 'Cordially Invited' would be on many of your Christmas lists this year.

If it is, or if you know of a small person asking for it, maybe give this excellent write up a read first.

Just in case.
4. STOP! TRAILER TIME!

Just in time for the Christmas rush, here's a three/four trailers that I've seen this past fortnight that all look great.

CAPTAIN MARVEL

YES YES YES. BRIE LARSON IS THE STRONGEST MO FO IN THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE AND THE HAIR AND YES YES IT'S PERFECT YES. Just you wait...

GLASS
M. Night Shyamalan (he of questionable hit/miss directing ability but I'm willing to give him a shot for this bad boy) brings his UNBREAKABLE/SPLIT movies together with GLASS. I am very much here for this

GODZILLA: KIND OF THE MONSTERS
OK, a quasi-sequel of sorts to KONG and GODZILLA that brings the historic killer characters of the latter's history to life on an epic scale. It's a giant monster flick, what's not to love?

BRIGHTBURN
Simple concept. What is SUPERMAN didn't actually land with a lovely family who imbued him with a sense of right or wrong? What if, in fact, there was something darkly wrong with this alien from another planet? BRIGHTBURN seeks to show you. B-Movie ish, I reck, but it knows it and I'd watch it just to see what it does.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME
Does it need any introduction? Really? COME ON

Is that enough? I think that's enough. If I've missed any, hit that reply button and let me know, yes? Yes.

Sidenote, taking the boy to see SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE this weekend. CAN'T. WAIT.

5. FORTNITE IS MORE THAN A GAME

This is one of the best things I've read about Fortnite in ages.

tl;dr - Fornite is A PLACE where people, kids, go to HANG OUT with each other.

I do this, pretty much every Tuesday night. I do it on a different game but Tuesday nights are when I catch up with my friends, find out how their weekends were, what they're up to this week etc... and we kick the hell out of some aliens too.

Gaming is great and oft-misunderstood. Try harder.

THE ESSENTIALS:

There has been a spate of recent adland departures of late. None of which have any connotations related to the Me Too movement. So they're not mentioned here. However, it IS good to see standards being introduced and upheld. More, please.

- Hashtags
- Wall Street.
- Congress

BONUS TIME

YOU ARE NOW APPROACHING THE END OF THE NEWSLETTER. MIND THE GAP.

FRIENDS. READERS. COUNTRYMEN.

Thank you for your readership. This past year has been effing mental. In so many ways. SO many ways. But I sign off 2018's batch of FToFs happier than I have ever been.

I hope you're ending the year [soon] on a high. The number of spoken to of late who are trying to squeeze in just... one... more... pitch... before Christmas... it's unbelievable. But rest will come soon, I promise.

If I could offer one piece of advice as I go into holiday season it is this

To thine own self be true.

Do that, and I swear it, you can't go far wrong.

----

You've all been amazing. Those of you that reply, you're welcome to do so and let's have a chat. Those of you who don't, it's cool, you don't have to (maybe you will come 2019).

So before I get all totes emosh...

Until next year, friends.

Merry Christmas,

Whatley out x

Ps. Be kind to yourself.
