Air Force brass select Holy Cross AD Pine as the next leader of the Falcons. Pine, who previously spent time at Army West Point, "The Air Force Academy is a special place, and I am excited for the opportunity to lead the athletics department at this elite institution. This is a tremendous time to build upon the foundation that is already in place within the athletics department." AFA Lt. Gen. Silveria: "I said from the beginning we needed to do this deliberately, the right way, in order to find the best person for such a dynamic and impactful role." (link)
In the first of what one would presume to be many similar deals, Fanatics gets fully in the college game with a 10-year, $23M pact with Oregon. Officially beings in January of 2020 & includes a $1.5M signing bonus & $21.5M in guaranteed royalties to be "split evenly between the school’s general fund and its athletics department." Nike keeps IP rights to the 'O' & any uniform-related look. Key, from Bloomberg's Novy-Williams, "Previously, the university managed deals with about 300 licensees one by one, with no upfront guarantee on sales. Under this new model, Fanatics will handle all of that itself, combining its licensing, manufacturing, design and delivery capabilities into one service." Fanatics EVP Eiler: "The goal would be to replicate this model where it makes sense for universities that want to think progressively about their future, connecting them closer to their fans than they’ve ever been before." (link)
"If it means the elimination of the SEC championship game, or other conference championship games, I’m against expansion. […] We really don’t spend any time on this subject. It’s not an issue we discuss as a group. But I would say probably every AD is totally against the elimination of the conference championship game." That's Georgia AD McGarity. Here's Clemson's Radakovich, "I don’t know if I’m necessarily opposed to it, but I need to have a lot of questions answered before I give it a thumbs up. I see some logistical issues. There are significant details we need to know. […] Our economic model, moving to 11 games, would be difficult. Seven (home games) is incredibly important, not only for the university, but it’s a real economic driver for the community here. [...] This is all easy to write about. But if Washington has to fly to Clemson, somebody better hold hotel rooms on the chance that they’re in the playoffs. Having watched my staff go through it the last three years with a three-week time period from being selected to going, it’s not easy." (link); The Athletic's Mandel runs through the hurdles of an expanded CFP, writes on the SEC, ESPN, Presidents/Chancellors & the existing bowl structure. Possible outcomes: 1) An expanded format in 2020 (35% likelihood); 2) No changes until 2026 (15% likelihood); 3) "A more modest revision" that could include changes to the selection process (50% likelihood). (link)
More than 100 current & former North Carolina student-athletes, including prominent members of the MBB program, have signed a letter opposing the university's plan to relocate & build a new $5M+ home for the controversial Silent Sam monument. Within the letter, "A monument to those who fought and killed to keep Black people enslaved has no place on our campus. White supremacy has no place on our campus." (link - article, link - open letter); The News & Observer's DeCock: "If at any point a majority of their men’s basketball teammates were to join them and threaten to take some kind of action, this whole debate might change very quickly. The basketball team has that kind of power. It just hasn’t been activated in Chapel Hill in a long, long time. As it stands, it’s going to be hard for university leaders to dismiss the anger of this growing group of principled and determined athletes from across all sports. Athletics is more important to the university than the academic world would ever care to admit, and having such a wide cross-section of athletes from varying sports and diverse backgrounds demanding action isn’t going to help the university’s image – or its recruiting. […] In many ways, these North Carolina athletes are awakening to something college athletes around the country are slowly discovering: They have, by virtue of their sports, tremendous power. What they may lack in financial recompense from their universities they have in clout thanks to their importance to their universities. They’re the reason the games are on television, not the people who cash ESPN’s ginormous checks." (link)
Texas Tech AD Hocutt's chat with the Board of Regents included approval of alcohol sales in general seating areas. The effort could be ramped up by MBB's home game versus Kansas State on January 5th. Looks like concessions prices will also be reduced. Hocutt: "We want our fans to be able to go to the concession stand and purchase food for $5." Hocutt is also pushing for better cell phone connectivity in/around venues. (link)
The Powell County (OH) Police Department has released thousands of pages of documents in the case of former Ohio State FB AC Smith's alleged domestic violence. Former Buckeyes HC Meyer is mentioned a number of times. One claim from Courtney Smith, "I ended up dropping the charges because Urban had the team attorney come talk to me and convince me that it was going to go to the media and he would lose everything if I didn’t drop the charges." Text messages, audio recordings & video footage, some disturbing, were all part of the release. (link)
Augustana (SD - DII) has full plans of making the jump to the DI ranks as part of its new 2030 strategic plan. KELO's Gaskins: "Some Vikings' fans dreams of the school joining the Summit League and reuniting with Div. II North Central Conference rivals South Dakota, South Dakota State, two North Dakota schools, and Nebraska-Omaha is expected to be a reality." No word on where FB might land. The Vikings currently operate off a ~$10M budget. (link)
You're going to want to call your concessionaire, like now, after reading this disturbing look at food prep at MLB, NFL, NHL & NBA venues across the nation, some of which double as home courts & fields for your programs. ESPN's Outside the Lines with the work, reviewed 16,000 food safety inspections at the 111 facilities noted. Notable: "The review of routine inspection reports from 2016 and 2017 found that at about 28 percent of the venues, half or more of the food service outlets incurred a high-level violation -- one that poses a potential threat for foodborne illness." Highest violation rates: Spectrum Center, Palace of Auburn Hills, American Airlines Center. Lowest: NRG Stadium, State Farm Arena, Oracle Arena. A live mouse in a cracker jacks bin, mouse droppings everywhere, beer leaking from a ceiling, cooks sweating over food, mold on bread, lots more. A nightmare, truly. (link - overview, link - full story)
USA Today's Schrotenboer takes a look at the growth of the bowl industry, thanks in large part to ESPN's economic interests. Back in 1996-97 there were 18 bowl games, now looking out to 2020 we could have 44. ESPN & ABC will televise 35 of the 40 this year, with ESPN Events owning 13. Former CBS Sports Prez Pilson: "ESPN looks at bowls as a highly profitable venture. They can get better ratings with a (lower-tier) bowl game than they can get with maybe just another college basketball game." Cumulative bowl profit for participants last year = $448M. Schrotenboer also goes in on the benefit to cities, coaches, schools & sponsors. (link); Here's a pretty thorough list of FB student-athletes who are skipping their squad's respective bowl to prepare for the NFL Draft. (link)

It's That Time of Year: Appalachian State AD Gillin goes with NC State OC Drinkwitz as the new boss in Boone. (link); North Dakota State AD Larsen stays within the family, promotes DC Entz to lead the Bison. (link); North Carolina Central AD Wicker McCree turns to Southern DC & former NCCU student-athlete Oliver. (link): Contract terms for new Maryland HC Locksley: $2.5M base, up to $775K in possible incentives, $100K increase to base each year, five-year pact, buyout if fired without cause is 65% of his guaranteed comp ($1.6M annually), no duty to mitigate. (link, link); Temple AD Kraft says he's ok with having to hire new FB HCs if it means the program is excelling. Turnkey aided the Owls' search. (link); Fox Sports' Feldman on the deal for new Texas Tech HC Wells: "It's six years for $18.8 million ($3.1M per). Buyout by coach is 20% of remaining guaranteed & by TTU is 70% of remaining guaranteed. The asst coach pool is $3.3 M+guaranteed increases each yr." (link); Minnesota HC Fleck gets a one-year extension that could keep him with the Gophs through the 2023 season. (link); Remember the mumbo jumbo reports of Auburn HC Malzahn agreeing to rework his contract? Malzahn: "A couple things I wanted to clear up that are out there. First of all, my contract has not changed one bit. I was never told I had to change my contract to keep my job. I have the support of our athletic director and president. There’s nobody hamstringing me from doing our job." (link)
Alabama FB HC Saban on the wire for reportedly taking in former Maryland HC Durkin as a "consultant." USA Today's Wolken: "Just because we are no longer surprised that Nick Saban is so willing to debase Alabama’s reputation so that he can run a halfway house for coaching rehab doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. And it certainly doesn’t mean that Saban, even with six national championships in tow and perhaps a seventh coming in a few weeks, gets to make that kind of decision without confronting the scorn that every other head coach in America would and should get in a similar situation." While there's no official word out of Tuscaloosa yet, Wolken further argues the Crimson Tide need to answer key questions around the situation, like what Durkin's exact responsibilities are, if he'll be traveling to CFP games with the team, pay rate, if he's having contact with student-athletes, etc. (link)
Whatever happened to Craig James? Yahoo's Thamel follows-up on the story of the former ESPN analyst, finds that James has recently earned a certificate in Biblical and Theological Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary. James to Thamel on his new role, "As a modern day warrior for Jesus Christ, I seek to share His Good News for all." Former Texas Tech & current Washington State HC Leach, who had a notable run-in with James, "You create your own karma. It looks like he might have created his. I think he’s a dishonest person and the sport is better off without him. And that’s pretty clear-cut." More. (link)
Former Compliance staffer & Bylaw Blog author Infante runs through measures up for vote at next month's NCAA Convention. Warning: It's a long Twitter thread, but insightful on a number of fronts. "If R-2018-1 passes, I don't see how the NCAA possibly punishes an athlete for anything other than an absolutely egregious violation of the agent rules over the next year. […] Either the legislation would allow athletes to receive the benefit of free/reduced cost services from the agent or the agent would charge the going rate, which is often a percentage of any contract signed, not a flat rate." More. (link)
Yum Brands is exiting its naming rights deal with Louisville on the Cards' MBB/WBB/Volleyball practice center & will gift $625K to break the agreement. Locally-owned Planet Fitness looks to be filling the void with a $3M commitment to expand the facility. No further details yet. (link)
Solid read & analysis from Outkick the Coverage's Travis on the up & coming challenge from DAZN, led by former ESPN boss Skipper. Travis thesis: "What DAZN is trying to establish, I’d bet, is that they can sign up millions of subscribers and then tap the capital markets and tell their story to the American and world investor. […] just like ESPN did with cable, they’d benefit from the virtuous circle, as their revenue grew the quality of their games would grow leading their revenue to continue to grow far into the future as the quality of their games got better and better, making every sports fan have to pay $9.99 a month for their content. (The biggest threat, honestly, to DAZN isn’t from the existing sports marketplace, it’s that the leagues and teams might start streaming their own events themselves. But, again, that’s expensive and puts the leagues into the production and distribution business directly. Maybe it happens one day, but more likely they take none of the risk on sign ups or subscriptions and just cash guaranteed checks instead.)" (link); And, as many of you have asked, "Who is the money behind DAZN?" Here's a 2014 profile of the Ukrainian-born American citizen Blavatnik from The New Yorker, looks like he made his fortune privatizing aluminum & oil interests in the Soviet Union. One the 20 richest individuals in the world. (link)
Virginia AD Williams chats with VirginiaSports.com's White in a trio of videos that review her first year in Charlottesville. "It's been a whirlwind, it's been great. [...] Everything I thought it would be." Williams points to new UVA Prez Ryan as a "tremendous supporter" of the new Master Plan for the Cavs, but also for her personally, "he is genuinely engaged in helping us reach our goals." Biggest challenge for Year 2: Completing the Master Plan. Each video 2-3 minutes in length. More. (link)
Part Three of Mississippi State AD Cohen's chat with the Starkville Daily News includes the continued belief Dudy Noble Field will be fully ready for opening day in 2019. As for future facility plans, points to an indoor Tennis space, more upgrades for FB. Cohen says of his time as AD for the Bulldogs, "This is the fifth institution I’ve had the chance to be a part of and I’m not sure everywhere I’ve ever been has had that (family) feel to it. […] the thing I love the most about this position is that every day I show up here early and get to work for the institution that I love, but also there’s these tremendous things growing up out of the ground. […] There is just so much to be excited about here that it really keeps you enthusiastic about the future. I feel like a kid in the candy store every day I get to be a part of this." (link)
Northern Illinois boss Frazier communicates to the Huskies' fanbase, notes a Week of Giving total of over $272K against a goal of $200K. The revamped Nelson Club inside the NIU Convocation Center is due open next month, will give supporters "a whole new pregame atmosphere" with new carpet, furnishings, bar area. Frazier also hopes everyone is smiling about FB's MAC Championship, in the same category as Alabama, Clemson & Oklahoma with four league titles in 10 years. (link)
Creighton supporters go in for $250K to create the Bruce & Jill Rasmussen Family Athletic Endowed Scholarship in honor of the Bluejays' long standing AD. Specifically, "The endowment will provide scholarship support to outstanding Bluejay student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and in competition. […] The Bruce and Jill Rasmussen Family Athletic Endowed Scholarship strives to recognize the incredible dedication the Rasmussen family has shown to Creighton Bluejay student-athletes, the athletic department, University and Omaha community." (link)
INFLCR gets its first conference-wide deal done as the America East signs on for a multi-year term. Looks like conference championship events are a key point of the relationship. AE Commish Huchthausen: "We have long emphasized the importance of creating quality content internally and recognize the strategic role social media plays in pushing out that content to tell our #3Pillars story. We take pride in being progressive in this space and partnering with an emerging, innovative company like INFLCR will only enhance our capabilities and take us to the next level." (link)
Also Noticed: Louisiana will play in the Cure Bowl, the name of which stems from its dedication to fight breast cancer. ULL AD Maggard notes the personal importance of that mission, as his wife, Kerry, was recently been diagnosed with the disease. (link); Oklahoma Prez Gallogly's denial: "I have never threatened [former OU prez] Dave Boren. That is false." (link); The NCAA's latest MBB 'Weekly Whistles' segment is out with a focus on Violation Rules. (link); Here is a searchable database of base salaries for all 51K employees at the University of Michigan. (link); Georgia is officially sold out of its 15,500 Sugar Bowl ticket allotment. (link); USF adds SC State to next year's FB schedule and adjusts its three-game series with Florida. The Gators will visit Raymond James in 2021 instead of 2023 as previously planned. The Bulls two trips to Gainesville (2022 and 2025) remain unchanged. (link); The StubHub Center, home to the NFL's Chargers and the L.A. Galaxy, will change its name to Dignity Health Sports Park next month. (link); The eight FB student-athletes dismissed or suspended by Rutgers last summer have been charged in a nine-count indictment that accuses them of fraudulent credit card use. (link)
