NICVA marked 80 years on 7th December, with a conference to celebrate the vital role the voluntary and community sector has played and continues to play in our society. Over 100 people including NICVA members, previous staff and representatives from voluntary organisations in the sector – some started by NICVA, attended the special celebration event.

NICVA recently held the first meeting of the revamped Public Affairs Forum. This Forum brings together people working in policy, public affairs and lobbying from the voluntary and community sector. The meeting gave an opportunity to discuss the changes, challenges and opportunities of continuing to lobby and campaign in the absence of the NI Assembly resulting in 10 top tips.

10 December marked 70 years since the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) at the UN in December 1948. On this anniversary, NICVA took the opportunity to sign a letter alongside 25 other organisations, to highlight the rights deficit that exists here including the failure to implement a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland which was a central commitment of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement.

6 of NI's Key Funders
The last funding news of 2018 focuses on 6 key NI funders who have been tirelessly supporting NI groups over the years.
Halifax Foundation for Northern Ireland: Community Grant Programme
Supports underfunded, grassroots charities that enable people, especially disabled and disadvantaged people, to play a fuller role in society. The programme is open to registered charities with an income of less than £1 million. Grants are for one year only and the average grant is currently £3700.
Enkalon Foundation
Since 1985 Enkalon Foundation awards have been are open to community groups and organisations across NI. The Enkalon Foundation is a local grant-making trust which makes small grants primarily in the fields of cross-community, unemployment and generally helping disadvantaged people. Grants are up to £6000 although the average grant size is between £500 and £1,000.
Big Lottery Fund: Awards for All
A small grants programme delivered and funded by the Big Lottery Fund in NI. The main aim is to bring real improvements to communities and to the lives of people most in need by funding projects which involve people in their communities, bringing them together to enjoy a wide range of charitable, community, educational, environmental and health-related activities. Grants awarded are between £300 to £10,000. (Larger grants are also available under the Empowering Young People and People and Communities grant programmes).
The Honourable The Irish Society: Northern Ireland Small Grants Fund
A fund created in 2014 by The Honourable The Irish Society, an historic charity which operates mainly in County Londonderry, to make grants of up to £2,000 for capital items to small across the whole of NI. Priority is given to projects relating to Alcohol & substance misuse, Elderly people, Disabled people, Homelessness, Disadvantaged minority communities, Prisoners & Ex offenders, Disadvantaged young people, Visual impairment, Domestic & sexual violence. (Also runs a grant programme just for organisations in Derry and neighbouring areas.)
The Fermanagh Trust Grants Programme
The Fermanagh Trust has since its inception supported over 400 voluntary and community charitable groups from throughout the County and its hinterland through its grant-making function and developmental support programmes. This support is focused on facilitating these groups in their efforts to improve and promote the well-being of those who are disadvantaged and socially excluded from throughout the community. Grants range from £150 - £3,000 maximum.
BBC Children in Need
Open to charities and not-for-profit organisations applying for any amount up to and including £10,000 per year for up to 3 years. The scheme gives grants for children and young people of 18 years and under experiencing disadvantage through Illness, distress, abuse or neglect, any kind of disability, behavioural or psychological difficulties or Living in poverty or situations of deprivation. (Large grants are also available.)
