Dear Friends:

I just wanted to share a letter I received. Not an email, mind you, but a genuine stamped and enveloped letter sent to our physical mailbox at Smalls Jazz Club:

"Dear Mr. Wilner - Enclosed is a check to Smalls in the amount of $200. We live in Albuquerque, NM. This is far from the NYC jazz scene, and we may never have the opportunity to hear a live performance in Mezzrow or Smalls. However, your live streams are the next best thing to being there. So, please accept the enclosed as a small (no pun intended) token of our appreciation for making this music available to a wide audience."

All I can say is that a single letter like this gives me such satisfaction and joy. It confirms for me that there are quite a few folks, just like this person, who really benefit from hearing live music from our venues. I am quite convinced that intelligent and decent, sensitive and kind human beings exist everywhere, even though our media wants us to believe otherwise. I believe that people really do care! I believe that communities really do exist! I believe that spiritual communities exist that are not joined corporeally, but bound through sound - pure sound without distinctions. Bound by sound that can't actually be described or visualized. Pure Spirit - open to all with ears!
