BOX TOP COLLECTION

Did you know that every box top is equal to 10¢ for our school?  There are hundreds of participating products, including products you probably already buy.  Your child will be coming home with a collection sheet and a list of participating products.  For a complete list you can go to BTFE.COM/PRODUCTS.  You can attach your box tops to the collection sheet or simply put them in a snack bag.  Send them in to your child’s teacher and help us earn money for supplies that the school needs. If you have any questions, please contact Melanie Gergen at melaniegergen@yahoo.com. Let’s make our school’s Box Tops for Education™ program a huge success this year.

Happy Holidays!

GOING GREEN TOGETHER
It’s the time for giving! Unfortunately the giving season is also filled with more stress, waste, and unwanted gifts; about one-third of Americans have an unused gift in their home (cdc.gov). Here are tips for a more sustainable holiday season.

Green Tips | Sustainable Gifts

  • Give to people, not to landfills. Ensure your gift will be used, while minimizing waste and the use of resources, by giving items that can be consumed such as fair trade chocolates, local foods, or homemade goodies. Or give experiences such as a museum/zoo membership, event tickets, or a gift certificate for a massage treatment/favorite restaurant.
  • Look for treasures you no longer use. You may have a beautiful item (ex: jewelry, heirloom) you don’t use anymore. Give unused items a new life by turning them into gifts to minimize new consumption, especially if others in your family agree to do the same.

  • The wrappings count too! Wrapping paper is a major source of holiday waste. We could save enough paper in the US to cover 45,000 football fields if every family wrapped just three gifts in reused materials (usgbc.org). Turn to newspapers, cloth bags, or reusable gift bags. Ensure your wrapping paper can be recycled by avoiding glitter and foil. Find bows and ribbons that can be recycled as well. And compost your tissue paper!
