Geriatrics Exposure for NYU Medical Students

Geriatrics Student Interest Group

On Monday, November 26, 26 members of the NYU School of Medicine Geriatrics Student Interest Group met with faculty and fellows to discuss the field, mentorship, and research opportunities (including our T35 Summer Research Program). The event was facilitated by Student Club Leaders Skyler Finning and Joel Kovoor and faculty advisor Meghan Lembeck, MD. Thank you to Amna Buttar, MD; Nina Blachman, MD; Megan Rau, MD, MPH; Vianna Broderick, MD; and Helen Sun, MD, for offering insights and advice to the next generation of geriatricians. The next meeting will be held in January and feature the CEO of the American Geriatrics Society, Nancy Lundebjerg, MPA, for a policy update.
Meet the Leaders: 2018 Geriatrics Student Interest Group

As leaders of the Geriatrics Student Interest Group, Skylar Finning and Joel Kovoor are responsible for arranging meetings and liaising with faculty on all things Geriatrics. Get to know them and be sure to look for them at events!
Skyler graduated from Bucknell University with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Women's and Gender Studies. She became interested in geriatric medicine after observing the care her grandfather received following diagnoses of colon cancer and multiple strokes.

NYU Buddy Program

On December 5, Josh Chodosh, MD, MSHS, FACP, presented Dementia case studies to 16 NYU medical and nursing student members of the NYU Buddy Program, sponsored by the NYULH Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias Family Support Program. The Buddy Program runs from September to April and pairs students with mentors (members of the community diagnosed with early stages of dementia). Over the 8-month period, students and mentors spend 30+ hours together, providing students with exposure to cognitive decline, mentors with companionship, and mentors’ caretakers with a respite—time to rest from their caretaking duties. To learn more about the work of the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia’s Family Support Program (co-directed by Dr. Chodosh), click here!

Home-Based Supportive Care (HBSC) Program Launch!
NYU Winthrop successfully launched its first Home-Based Supportive Care (HBSC) program on November 27th. The program provides patients with 24/7 access to supportive care services at home in order to improve quality of care and reduce unnecessary ED visits, admissions and cost. HBSC will be anchored in NYU Winthrop’s CHHA and will act as an extension of the current campus-based palliative and/or disease-specific supportive care services across the health system.  Click here to learn more!

The education component of the HBSC program consists of didactic and interactive 8-hour instruction for the palliative care interdisciplinary team, presented by Antonia Ferrer, RN, MPA (photographed) and Barbara Kramer, RN, over the course of two days, culminating in case studies and interactive role play.
