North Carolina's Board of Governors pushes back on the plan to build a new $5M+ history center to house the controversial 'Silent Sam' monument. Instead, a new committee will be formed to tackle the issue with recommendations by mid-March. Tar Heels MBB HC Williams: "In my own personal belief. I think it would be best if it was not here." (linklink)
In a long interview with Cyclone Fanatic, Iowa State AD Pollard says we may still not have enough data points on the current structure of the College Football Playoff to know which way forward is best. On possible league expansion, "I can tell you within the Big 12, there isn’t any discussions, appetite, there’s nothing even — there’s no pulse for anything but what we have. I’m not naive enough to think that ever is forever and never is forever, but I can tell you there isn’t any discussion." The new Sports Performance Center in Ames will break ground in the Spring, fundraising for the new space has been "absolutely phenomenal." On his fit at ISU, "I say all the time that Ames is a company town and we’re the company. It was the perfect place for me to raise my family because we just fit this culture." Lots more. (link)
Last month, Kansas Chancellor Girod indicated the university had be told to "stand down" in its handling of the MBB-FBI developments as the NCAA & federal government worked their angles. Since then, Girod has not clarified the situation with local media outlets, which includes an open records request looking for documents related to his position. KU Faculty Senate Prez McClure has some strong words, "If a faculty member or staff member was involved with anything like this, they would be in considerable trouble. […] The faculty’s attitude is pretty much who is working for whom? Is the athletic director working for the chancellor or is the chancellor working for the athletic director? It is an issue of considerable distress for the faculty." Also, McClure on money tension between faculty & athletics, "They are a different kind of entity, and we’re all kind of jealous. They have all been given raises for many years. But I also remind people that I have never had 16,300 people buy tickets to my class." (link)
Alabama FB HC Saban on former Maryland boss Durkin hanging with the Crimson Tide, "DJ Durkin is spending a few days with our staff in Tuscaloosa from a professional development standpoint. He has not been hired in any capacity at The University of Alabama. He is simply observing our operation as many other coaches have done through the years." (link)
Florida FB HC Mullen believes the 2-for-1 offer Gators AD Stricklin made for a future series with UCF is "actually a really good deal." Mullen: "When I was at Mississippi State we did it, we played some two-for-ones with schools in smaller conferences like them. Getting the opportunity to have an SEC school is a big plus for them. […] If they want to try and toughen their schedule, that would be great, a good opportunity for them if they want take it. It's up to them." I just triple checked Danny White's Twitter feed. Nothing...yet. (link)
Rutgers settles with former Women's Swim/Dive HC Martin for $725K, who left the program a year ago in the midst of a NJ.com report of a toxic culture within her program. RU publicly exonerated Martin as part of the deal & Scarlet Knights AD Hobbs "was required to write a letter of recommendation for Martin as she seeks future employment." Looks like part of an email between the two in which Hobbs asked for Martin's resignation was used as evidence Martin was fired & did not resign voluntarily, as was reported. Martin had two & a half years & $227K remaining on her contact. (link)
Looks like the game contract between Texas A&M & Boston College MBB that didn't tip last weekend carries a $100K breach clause. Aggies Senior Assoc. AD Moore: "We’re not sure yet what exactly is going to happen. On our end, there is a lot of people involved." (link); You might guess Hawaii FB has the most international student-athletes in FBS, but would you believe Eastern Michigan has the second most? Indeed it's true as the Eagles have cats from Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany & Canada on their roster. EMU HC Creighton, who spent a year coaching in Sweden, "If you play it, you’re passionate about it. The Europeans who love American football dream about playing Division I football and the NFL, just like people here. What’s progressing slowly is how receptive American football coaches are to figuring that out." (link)

It's That Time of Year: Akron AD Williams goes with UT Chattanooga's Arth as the next FB HC for the Zips. (link); James Madison boss Bourne picks Elon's Cignetti. Looks like a six-year deal that averages $500K annually when including retention bonuses. (link, link); Two members of the Colorado Board of Regents voted against approving the contract for new FB HC Tucker. Not because of the hire, but rather their overall concern for the safety and finances of the game. Regent Shoemaker: "I need to vote against the contract because coaching contracts are about the only opportunity the regents have to weigh in on the football program, which is a campus-level responsibility. ... I see too much emphasis on winning and too little on safety. ... I believe collegiate head coaches are paid far too much money. In an ideal world, some of that money would be used to pay the players and provide long-term health care, both mental and physical health care, for them." Regent Kroll: "While the (athletic) department likes to espouse the idea this money won't come from student fees or taxpayer money, that's just wrong." More. (link); On the hardwood, NC State MBB HC Keatts gets a new six-year deal taking him through the 2023-24 season. Now makes $2.7M annually. (link)
San Jose State AD Tuite hires Penn State Director of Compliance Rasmussen as the new Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance for the Spartans. Rasmussen spent three years at BYU before his one & a half year stint with the Nittany Lions. (link); St. Bonaventure boss Kenney pegs Maryland Director of Compliance Clingan as the new Assoc. AD for Compliance in Olean. (link)
Cash & Facilities: The bulk of the $3M gift from Planet Fitness franchisees Rick and David Kueber will go toward a facelift at Louisville's basketball and lacrosse training center, especially with designs to impress recruits. (link); Little Rock announces three naming gifts totaling nearly $1M plus $70K raised to support the John F. Torbett Memorial Scoreboard at the Donaghey Aquatic Center. (link); Towson begins construction on two new artificial practice fields and a new stadium field, funded by a combo of state funds, private gifts and university cash. Should be ready this summer. Phase I includes the two full-field surfaces for FB, Men's and women's LAX, and Women's Soccer, while the second phase will build Tiger Stadium, home of the Women's Soccer team with both LAX programs accessing the space for games, as well. Seating for 1,000, plus concessions, press box and more. (link)
Dallas Morning News' Baby goes in on FB attendance challenges for FBS programs in the state. Texas Tech Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations & Strategic Communications Giovannetti: "All the schools are fighting it. Even what you would call the 'blue bloods' are fighting it -- the distracted viewer, right? There's so many options for somebody when they come to your game." Texas A&M Deputy AD Rempe: "One of our hopes this year is to really analyze the scan rates and who's using the tickets and who's not. The ones that are using them all, thank them. The ones who aren't using them, find out why and what we can do better, for sure." Texas AD Del Conte points to the importance of "magical moments," "We're thinking out of the box to create an environment that people want to go, 'This live action, I want to be a part of that.'" More. (link)
North Texas AD Baker is quoted in the previous article & Yahoo's Thamel believes the Mean Green could "be the next UCF." Thamel nods to the size & growth of the DFW market, an advancing campus footprint, "aligned leadership" & aggressive marketing. Baker: "I really don’t feel like North Texas has a ceiling. When you look at the size and scale and scope of the university … I don’t think there’s any question that this program can be an elite Group of Five institution." SMU HC Dykes chimes in, "When you have a really good young coach, and I think the AD, Wren Baker, is a rising star. I think that they understand … how much potential that place has." (link)
Stadium's Goodman with his latest MBB 'Chain of Command' & it's the Big 12's turn for the exercise. Based on feedback from coaches across the league on nine different variables, Goodman ranks the jobs in this order: Kansas, West Virginia & Texas tied at 2nd, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, TCU & Kansas State tied at 7th, Baylor & finally Texas Tech. (link)
"If Vandy doesn’t get what they need in hiring Malcolm, they have no one to blame but themselves. You don’t get the combination of human engineering, education, common sense and intelligence in many people. He’s got ’em all." That's NBA G-League VP Smith on Vanderbilt's AD hire of outgoing G-League Prez Turner. More, this one from NBA Deputy Commish Tatum, "I don’t think Vanderbilt fans have anything to worry about. Malcolm is the kind of leader who brings with him unique experiences from across sports business, and he can tap into those career learnings to bring about real change at an organization." Turner on the challenge of raising money for the Commodores, "I’ve had no problem creating revenue throughout my career, and I look forward to applying similar and new approaches with this new opportunity at Vanderbilt." (link)
Syracuse AD Wildhack reveals he initially said "no" to an overture about becoming the next leader of the Orange when former AD Coyle exited for Minnesota. But, "after some research and consideration and a lot of conversations with my family and ultimately a meeting with the chancellor, I said, 'Let’s do this.'" On toning down the "New York's Team" branding, "In researching Syracuse, A.) we’re a national brand. We have strong alumni bases in Los Angeles, Seattle, Miami, Dallas, so we’re a national and actually an international brand. We market and sell ‘Syracuse University.’ That’s who we are, and athletics is an important subset of that." More in this Q&A with the Democrat & Chronicle. (link)
Former Oklahoma FB student-athletes Westbrook and Mixon pranked then-OC Riley by saying they were going to sit out the Sugar Bowl two years ago in advance of the NFL Draft. Skipping bowls games has, of course, become an increasingly popular trend, made a conversation topic by Stanford's McCaffrey and LSU's Fournette in 2017. Baton Rouge-based attorney Fischer, who works with college players vetting pre-draft insurance: "What you saw is the tip of the iceberg. You're going to see a lot of kids skipping." Football Bowl Association Exec. Dir. Waters: "Will it impact bowls in this age when people are looking for a reason not to go instead of go? Yep. But at the end of the day, the bowls have been impacted by coaches leaving for years. ... It's kind of hard to throw rocks at kids when the people we trust to lead them are doing the same thing." (link)
Today marks the end of a seven-year run for the MBB Hy-Vee Classic at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines as Iowa will not play in the intrastate rivalry event between the Hawkeyes, Iowa State, Drake and Northern Iowa after this year's edition. Part of the story is the Big Ten's move to 20 league games. Each program earns roughly $125K as part of the event. Bulldogs AD Hardin has reached out to Barta & Cyclones peer Pollard in hopes of getting back on their schedules, while UNI boss Harris is undecided on if he will attempt to schedule the two 'Power 5' schools in the future. (link)
TV/OTT: ESPN Prez Pitaro tells Digiday his company's four objectives for 2019: Direct to consumer; audience expansion; quality storytelling and programming; and innovation. Calls it "just the first inning" for ESPN+, says the Worldwide Leader is working on "parallel paths" for linear & digital expansion, points to five consecutive quarters of improvement in net subscriber losses (pretty interesting way to frame it). Are the likes of Amazon & Facebook a major threat? "Every big tech company is a legitimate competitor as we move forward in this landscape." (link); More on DAZN, this time with a profile from Britain's Evening Standard on CEO Denyer. Notable: "Sport is feast or famine. There’s either nothing on or there’s tons on, so the problem with owning two sports channels (Sky & BT) is that you can only show two things. Someone at that sports channel makes the decision on what they schedule, they make a very good business decision but it may not be right for you as a Sheffield Wednesday fan." More. (link); According to SBD's Ourand, Charter has yet to enter any bid for the 22 Disney-Fox RSNs. (link)
Also Noticed: Relive part of the wild LSU vs. Texas A&M 7OT game from this season, through the headsets of the videoboard producers and directors. Pretty cool back & forth in the booth on a play that was key in the game's outcome. (link); Auburn expands its biometric access system to nine more buildings as Princeton Identity Inc. is providing its new IDS software and Access200 iris readers as part of the latest system update. (link); West Virginia has sold 3,500 of its 8,000 allotment to the Camping World Bowl this year. (link); The Rose Bowl media day will only have players on the Washington and Ohio State 2-deep available. (link); Seat Geek is now letting users layer their tickets into Snapchat photos and videos, essentially rendering it a used ticket stub to be kept as a memory. (link); Ames Watson Capital, owner of the Fanzz retail chain, buys Lids for $100M. Fanatics will be a minority owner having put up 10% and will focus, not surprisingly, on e-commerce operations.
