‘HEAD’ Lines

Walking in the shoes of others
Dear parents/carers

Following on from my ‘HEAD’ Lines of last week I want to continue drawing your attention to just how amazing John Hanson Students are.

This week is the turn of Connor Pagett.

Connor is one of 13 John Hanson Students who are travelling to Tanzania in July 2019.

In the October half term break, Connor took on the challenge of walking the equivalent distance that many children in Tanzania have to do just to get to school.  This equated to 100km in total, he walked 20km every day for 5 days.

We are very proud of his commitment and determination to take on and complete this challenge, alongside all of the other events the students embarking on what will be a life changing trip to Africa, will be doing between now and next summer.

John Hanson students – you are amazing!

Enjoy the weekend with your children

Regards
Russell Stevens
Headteacher
John Hanson students sang at the Clatford School Christmas Fair on Friday night and were well received. We were pleased that we could help to create a festive atmosphere at this well attended Christmas Fair.

Next week we will be performing at our Christmas Concert -
Sing Up for Christmas - see details later in the newsletter.
We are delighted to announce that after months of work on our careers provision, we have been successful in getting through the first ‘Commitment’ stage of the Quality in Careers standard.  We will continue to build on our positive careers programme and welcome any support you can offer.  Please contact Anna Hall on anna.hall@jhanson.hants.sch.uk if you or your company would be willing to come in for a formal session, an informal drop in, or can offer a work experience placement.
Lloyds Banking Group Ambassador Day
On Friday 30th November, 20 Year 10 GCSE Business students accompanied Mrs Bailey to Lloyds Banking Group in Andover to take part in a day of team building and communication workshops. They demonstrated excellent skills in both areas working with their peers from both their own school and also from other local secondary schools and Andover College.

As part of the day, 4 students – Adelle Gurr, Kajol Rai, Emma Huggett and Rocha Dennis also pitched their mental wellbeing app enterprise idea to a team of dragons. Both the idea and the presentation were fantastic and we are very proud of them.

Cyber Safety -  Merry Cyber Safety Christmas

Safety tips for Christmas

Millions of children across the country will unwrap internet related gadgets this Christmas and as a school we are encouraging parents to discuss staying safe online and the consequences of not doing so.

Smartphones, Tablets, Laptops etc. open up a world of exploration, learning and fun for children and as a Computer Science teacher I would encourage this wholeheartedly. However, the internet is another world and in order to protect children we need to  ensure they understand how to stay safe while they are using these digital devices.

Over the last few months we have posted a number of entries on how children can protect themselves whilst using the internet. Below is a summary of how children can do this:
  • Explain how children can use privacy settings to make sure only approved friends can see posts and images, and warn them about sharing personal information
  • Check if any of the mobile apps they use have location services enabled, and disable this if they do not want to be tracked
  • Show them how to report offensive comments or block people who upset them
  • Check ‘tagging’ settings so that when others are posting or sharing photos online, your child’s identity is not revealed
  • Encourage your child to come and talk to you if they see anything that upsets them
  • Ask them to show you which social media apps they use, what they like about them and talk about how to use them safely
You can find out more about how children use social media, the apps they use, the risks they face, how to use privacy settings, and advice and tips about how to talk to your children at:
