“...when separate, local efforts can be seen as networks then strengthen as communities of practice, suddenly and surprisingly a new system emerges at a greater level of scale.” -- Margaret Wheatley and Deborah Frieze

You are the first to know! Today, at the Open Eugene Festival, the coders, the ones who laboriously write the software line by line, Heron and Nathan, who will be introduced to you as soon as I can edit the video interviews, (deep breath) encouraged me to publish the link to the SOAR page so that people can start using it, ask questions, make suggestions. Your feedback will help refine the finished product.

It is NOT ready for live "beta testing." It's a bare-bones site with many to-do's to bring it up to the initial vision, and our goal is to have it ready for the beta test by March 15, 2019, when a small group of actual users will begin adding their profiles to the database. Today, you can create your profile to gain access to the site and look around, but you will find dummy images and text, links that don't work. All existing profiles will be dumped when the site goes live for beta testing.

Backpedaling a bit, the Open Eugene Festival is a much smaller event than the Hack-For-A-Cause event which launched the work on SOAR. It offered us a chance to intensely network with other techies in some very encouraging ways, and has basically been a booster-rocket for all of us.

Click the link below and have some fun.

Not familiar with SOAR? Here's some back story

Here's some video of our presentation at the Open Eugene Festival.

Skip to 32:30 to see the presentation about SOAR! The two young men writing the code for this software have spent about 100 hours each of volunteer time to bring the project to this point, and in this video are asking other coders to join them and bring it to readiness for a beta test.

As the visionary stimulus for this project, I had no idea how much technical time and talent are needed to build a website. I am deeply grateful for, and proud of, what Heron and Nathan have contributed to ECAN. I am also astounded at the enormous amount of support the Eugene tech community, the "Silicon Shire," has generously provided for the public social benefit of this area. ~ David

To Help The Homeless, Some In LA Are Giving Them A Place To Stay

“Mentoring people returning home from prison after they’ve been released is an affirmation of the belief that there’s no such thing as a throw-away person.”  -- a comment on the mentorship program at Sponsors, Inc. I just completed the orientation to this program, and I am almost overwhelmed by the value that is added to the lives of people with criminal histories by Sponsors. The support provided to mentors is huge, pro-active failure prevention, and I strongly urge anyone who wishes to be transformed by personally witnessing another human being turn their lives around to SIGN UP NOW! (just tell 'em David Hazen sent you)
