NCAA MBB headliner Katz writes with updates on where the MBB-FBI situation stands right now. Prez Emmert: "Our investigative teams are already working aggressively on all of these cases, but we have to wait and see how these trials and the information play out over the coming weeks and months. I wish they would happen faster but that’s up to the Department of Justice." Emmert in response to criticism from Gonzaga HC Few, "I agree with him, but there needs to be an ability to acquire actual evidence before a decision is made and it takes time to do that. It can affect the students who are competing against a team that was caught cheating and doesn’t get penalized until all of the offenders are gone. Nobody likes that system but it’s the best one we have available. It’s a representative system that the universities put in place." More. (link); South Carolina HC Martin interviews with The State on the same topic, believes hoops got targeted by the feds due to the AAU scene, "Can you imagine if the feds went out and investigated, the way they are capable of investigating other sports? You don’t think they’d find corruption in other sports in recruiting? It’s the same thing. We’re no different. They just targeted basketball. Don’t ask me why. I know why, but we were targeted. We’re basically being audited. Every great company gets audited." Additionally, "Here’s my thing: I’ve always felt that the people who cut corners, sooner or later, they get caught. I’ve always felt that way. In anything that you do, I have never felt differently. People that want to cut corners and cheat, they aren’t going to impact me." Lots more. (link)
Looks like Southern Miss Prez Bennett is going to wait three to six months - or longer - before naming a new AD for the Golden Eagles. The timeline would indicate Interim AD Mitchell has a nice runway to prove he deserves the post on a permanent basis. Mitchell points to a tag team approach with Interim Deputy AD Morrison that he believes will be fruitful. Notable: "So much of the staff has gone through so much transition. I want to provide some stability for them and communicate with them and make them understand that it’s not a scary situation we’re in." Mitchell & Morrison will also have to hire a new external boss as Senior Assoc. AD Pugh's last day was Friday. (link)
Indiana State boss Clinkscales credited with moving the fundraising ball forward for the Sycamores thanks to strategic alignment with campus' Office of Advancement & nailing some specific projects that he identified early in his tenure. Focal points: Upgrades for FB, lots more nutrition support for student-athletes & weight room enhancements showed key donors & supporters progress was possible. Clinkscales: "We had to show our donor base we can have success with tangible goals. The goal (for Elevate) was to have $600,000 by July 1, 2019. We're going to exceed that and show the results from a performance standpoint on how we're getting bigger, stronger and faster to help recruiting. They're seeing those types of things. What that does is gives our donors confidence. Any investor is not going to invest in anything if it they don't see what the future is going to be." Mentions a possible Athletics Facilities Master Plan could be in the works. (link)
Stanford Women's Volleyball with a thrilling five-set National Championship triumph over Nebraska last night in Minneapolis. Cardinal HC Hambly on another crown headed to Palo Alto: "The commitment to getting better every day. We were really frustrated about last year. The things we asked them to do were not easy. We asked them to bust their ass on defense, work harder, get better at passing, be more competitive, go for it. We have had to make some paradigm shifts in the way we looked at the game, the effort level. The seniors and these guys were driving that, making sure they held each other accountable. That's what this match was about, about defense and passing." (link); Stanford AD Muir apologizes post-game for an illustration on the locker room white board that showed the Cardinal tree making an inappropriate gesture toward Nebraska's Herbie Husker. (link)

Construction in UConn's "Athletics District" is moving along according to Huskies AD Benedict. "The grandstand is down now (at Morrone) and one of the challenges that we’ve had from a fundraising standpoint is so many people have heard for so long that this is going to get done. Now I can say it has to get done because we don’t have a stadium any longer for soccer. So we have to build something. ...We’re not trying to build the Taj Mahal but we need nice facilities that are efficient that can put us in a position where we can be on somewhat equal footing with our aspirations and our peers in our conference." Heavy rains in September and October delayed infrastructure work and the discovery of peat in the soil has been an issue, as well. The new 4,000-seat soccer stadium should be ready in time for the 2020 season, as will the 1,500-seat baseball venue and 500-seat softball digs. Renderings included. (link)
The Toledo Blade's Briggs reports Ohio State AD Smith considered Iowa State HC Campbell, Syracuse boss Babers & former Oklahoma HC Stoops before deciding to turn the keys to FB over to OC/AHC Day. Smith consulted with Oklahoma AD Castiglione, who made a similar move last off-season. Smith was exceedingly impressed with how Day led the team during Meyer's suspension, when no student-athletes were disciplined, even though the festivities of a new school year were at their fingertips. (link)
Illinois FB HC Smith's annual compensation for the remaining years on his newly extended contract is $4M, but if he is dismissed without cause after his sixth or seventh year on the job, the Illini only owe him $1M per his new deal. Buyout for next year is $4M and is $2M in 2020 plus any remaining portion of his salary for that contract year. (link); With his team's Cure Bowl appearance, Louisiana FB HC Napier ends he season with $50K in bonus money. (link); ESPN's Rittenberg reports that new Temple FB HC Diaz will have an annual salary ranking among the top five of the Group of 5 coaches. Five-year deal. (link); Fresno State FB HC Tedford gets $100K bonus for the Las Vega Bowl win. Finishes season with $900K in on-field bonuses and could get another $200K once final attendance numbers come in. He has pocketed more than $2.3M in bonuses in the past two seasons. (link, link)
Outgoing Georgia Tech FB HC Johnson on the CFP expansion talk: "There’s no rhyme or reason (for the selection of the four playoff teams). It’s just subjective. You can say what you want. It’s not that hard, You do away with the conference championship games. They’ve been doing it in FCS forever, and I was a big part of that. I’m sure it’s something they’ll look at. They’re probably not going to ask me." (link); Notre Dame FB HC Kelly is among those in favor of the eight-team format, as well: "Puts a lot of pressure on us every year relative to our schedule and what we need to do. ... I think we've journeyed into it a little deeper now that there's probably, from a commissioner standpoint, an appetite to opening dialogue. But I'm just standing here as the football coach at Notre Dame. I don't have any inside info to share with you." Suggests four spots for Power 5 teams plus independents. (link)
Minnesota's single-game ticket pricing has been "sent to the stratosphere by being prorated at a similar price to the fee-attached season tickets" and attendance is suffering. Of the nine conference home games left on the MBB schedule, five have prices between $55-90. The Men's Hockey game against Wisconsin runs $50-70. More on the way prices reached this point, including the "scholarship seating" fees instituted by former AD Teague. (link)
If you believe in history providing a roadmap for what may happen in the future, you'll want to give this piece from The Ringer a read, an oral history of how FOX scored NFL rights back in the early 90s to cement its place among the big four networks. (link); Investor & media analyst Jackson: "A lot of people pointing to this tale as proof of why streamers will seek these sports rights in the coming years However, Fox needed the NFL to give vale to its nascent network likely valued in the $100s of MMs  All the streamers already worth several hundred billion. […] It’s worth to someone like Blavatnik/DAZN but not for Amazon." (link)
Also Noticed: Yesterday's MBB game against Abilene Christian was Texas Tech's last to be played in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum as the venue will be torn down this summer. The Red Raiders now play home games in United Supermarkets Arena. (link); Oklahoma AD Castiglione says a future FB series with Tulsa is possible. The Sooners want to keep a strong presence in the Tulsa area, exhibited by last night's OU-USC MBB matchup at the neutral BOK Center in Tulsa. (link): Utah offered donors spots on its chartered plane to Lexington for yesterday's MBB tilt at Kentucky, and somehow two Salt Lake City-based UK fans got on the plane. Utes HC Krystkowiak discovered it when he went to introduce himself, thinking they were boosters, asked them not to wear blue on the way back. (link)
