The West Colfax Association of Neighbors (WeCAN) turns 10 this year! As the West Colfax neighborhood continues to grow, so does WeCAN. We are looking forward to bringing even more neighbors together in 2019. If you are looking for ways to be more involved in your community this year please contact us! Get Involved with WeCAN in 2019
Meet some neighbors and help out right here in your West Colfax neighborhood. Here's a snap shot of what is coming in 2019 for WeCAN and other ways you can get involved.
- West Colfax Clean-up Days in May and October
- Tree Planting Day in April
- WeCAN Running Club continues every Monday, 6:30pm for a lap around Sloan's Lake Park and return to Seedstock Brewery for a bogo beer.
- Expanding our Sustainability Committee and commitment to the Sustainable Neighborhood Network.
- Join the Social Planning Committee: Help plan and organize our 10th Anniversary Party and bring more social events to West Colfax.
- Join the Business Outreach Committee: As more businesses move into West Colfax, WeCAN wants to connect with them all!
- Join the Communications Committee: WeCAN Denver is on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and has a Google Calendar, help keep these up-to-date for us.

January 8th General Meeting
WeCAN meets the second Tuesday of every month (January-May, August-November), 6:00-7:00pm in the Main Hall of the Confluence Ministries Building at 1400 Quitman St. Here is a glimpse at this month's General Meeting.
6:00-6:05pm: Denver Police District 1 Community Resource Officer, Bob Anderson starts our meetings by sharing recent crime statistics, crime prevention tips, and is available to answer all your questions and concerns.
6:05-6:10pm: Northwest COP Shop (5094 W. Colfax Ave.) update from neighbor, Carolyn Billecci, will share resources the COP Shop has and Open House Event being hosted at the COP Shop.
6:10-6:25pm: Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales Branch Library Program Administrator of the New Americans Project, Virginia Vassar, will present on NAP (New Americans Project) and STIR (Services to Immigrants and Refugees). Program Administrator at the Branch, Nadia Rendon, will present on Branch programming and COHS (Career Online High School).
6:25-6:40pm: 4200 W. Colfax Ave. redevelopment plans from neighbors Mike and Cole Huling. Come hear the vision for this property as a 40's inspired hotel and bar and ask your questions.

Recycle Your Tree with Denver’s Treecycle Program
Recycling your holiday tree is as easy as ever thanks to Denver Recycles’ annual Treecycle program. For every tree recycled with Treecycle, Denver residents help keep organic material out of the landfill, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create mulch that is made available to Denver residents for free at the annual Mulch Giveaway & Compost Sale in May.
Participating in Treecycle is easy, free, and truly a no-brainer. After the holidays, follow these easy steps to recycle your tree:
- Remove all decorations, lights, and the tree stand from your tree.
- Set your tree out for collection on one of your scheduled trash collection days during the two-week Treecycle collection period.
- Reclaim free mulch made from your tree at the annual Mulch Giveaway & Compost Sale in May 2019.
Last year, Denver residents recycled more than 20,000 trees. Participate in this year’s Treecycle program and help Denver recycle even more! Volunteers Needed: Support Denver Public Library Efforts to Connect Individuals with Affordable Rental Housing
The Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales Library is launching a new initiative to help community members in need of affordable rental housing connect and apply to available programs. We are seeking volunteers from the community to support this effort!
Volunteers will be trained on how to help individuals identify affordable rental housing opportunities, complete, and submit applications as part of housing application workshops which will be held the third Wednesday of each month from 3:00-5:30pm, beginning in February 2019.
Volunteers must attend an initial training, agree to a background check, and be willing to make a 6-month commitment. For more information or to apply to volunteer, please contact Alix Midgley, Community Resource Specialist, at (720) 865-2361, or amidgley@denverlibrary.org.

Water Conservation Program
Mile High Youth Corp (MHYC) provides FREE energy assessments to income-qualified households. As determined by the assessment, MHYC will provide FREE energy efficient devices. Denver District Attorney’s Office Youth Advisory Council: Apply Now!
The Youth Advisory Council is a group of engaged, dedicated, and diverse young people ages 11-18 who are committed to helping young people make good choices and not ending up in the criminal justice cycle. The Council will work with the District Attorney to gather community concerns, generate ideas for improvement, and discuss the role of the District Attorney’s office.
The Council will provide an ongoing youth voice to inform the District Attorney as she believes that youth are best served when they are active participants in decisions made about them. The District Attorney will look to the expertise of our youth to enhance and transform our juvenile criminal justice systems.

BE A PART OF THE BLUE BRIDGE. LEARN HOW YOU TOO CAN PARTICIPATE IN SUPPORTING PUBLIC SAFETY IN NORTHWEST DENVER! The Northwest Denver Public Safety Resource Center is a community-oriented nonprofit whose vision is to improve public safety through education, resources, and facilitating dialog between the community and the Denver Police Department. As a resource center, the organization acts as an information first stop for city and area community services to the residents of Northwest Denver’s District 1.
