Dear <<First Name>>,

Hope you're having a wonderful holiday break and gearing up for a great 2019. Happy New Year!

Consumed
I got through 37 books this year. I also started about 30 other books that I stopped reading at some point – some because they didn't hold my interest and others I'm still working my way through slowly. Of the books I completed, here were my favorite picks:
  1. Remembrance of Earth's Past Trilogy by Cixin Liu  – I ws absolutely sucked in with The Three-Body Problem. My favorite was The Dark Forest, the second volume. I'm not a big sci-fi reader, but this was such a treat and I was so sad when I finished all three books.

  2. The Fifth Discipline: The Art & Practice of The Learning Organization by Peter Senge – a timeless book with lessons on systems thinking, mental models, and learning. I wrote three blog posts related to this book: on systems archetypes, personal mastery, and the seven learning disabilities of organizations.

  3. Managing the Professional Service Firm by David H. Maister – another timeless book that had many relevant lessons for the client services work we do at Barrel. I wrote a short post on one of the book's lessons on the importance of marketing to existing clients.

  4. Off the Clock: Feel Less Busy While Getting More Done by Laura Vanderkam – loved this book about how tracking your time in 15 or 30-minute increments can help you see where your time really goes. I ended up doing this for a few months and wrote about my progress midway.

  5. Astroball: The New Way to Win It All by Ben Reiter – this was my favorite sports book of the year and the part about building a team of players with a growth mindset really resonated with me.

  6. Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear – great book with a solid framework; we gifted this to everyone at Barrel this year.

  7. City of Thieves by David Benioff – I loved this story of two kids in wartime Russia fighting for survival and trying to accomplish an impossible mission.

2018: Habits That Stuck
I've made it an annual tradition to do a review of my habits. This year, my habits primarily center on exercise and intermittent fasting. As I've done this for a few years, it's become less about adding brand new habits and more about refining some foundational ones that make the biggest difference in my life.

Cheers,
Peter

P.S. You can check out my list of books read right here. My hope is to get a good mix of challenging reads with some that are entertaining, inspiring, and instructive.

If you like what you've read, please share with your friends. They can sign up for the list here. Also, I always welcome recommendations of any kind–books, podcasts, movies, etc.
